The riddle of α-resorcinol was initially studied extensively as an abnormal growth phenomenon, which significantly contributed to our understanding of asymmetric growth mechanisms in organic polar crystals, yet the crystalline surface structure and solvent behavior have not received adequate attention. To address this and meet the demand for advanced organic nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene (2,7-DHN) was studied as a model substance to revisit the riddle of α-resorcinol. Surprisingly, 2,7-DHN crystals expose naphthalene-rich and hydroxyl-rich surfaces along polar c-axis, similar to the packing of α-resorcinol. Single-crystal growth experiments and simulations show that solvent type significantly influences the asymmetric growth and morphology of 2,7-DHN. Compared to α-resorcinol, the "pocket-like" structure of 2,7-DHN plays a more decisive role, thanks to the strong hydrogen bonding and deeper matching between the rougher crystalline surface and solvent molecules. This work aims to provide a new perspective for revealing the riddle of α-resorcinol and investigates the defect control and morphology prediction in organic NLO crystals.

Social buffering may reduce the persistent impacts of acute early life stress (aELS) and, thus, has important implications for anxiety- and trauma-related disorders. First, we assessed whether aELS would induce maladaptive fear incubation in adult mice, a PTSD-like phenotype. Overall, animals showed incubation of fear memory in adulthood, independent of aELS condition.

Objective: To describe the surgical approach used in horses undergoing C7-T1 ventral interbody fusion using a kerf cut cylinder (KCC) implant and report the short- and long-term outcomes.
Study Design: Observational retrospective study.
Animals: A total of 38 client-owned horses.

Background: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey provides nationally representative data on child obesity using measured height and weight. Due to COVID-19, the NHANES August 2021-August 2023 cycle had design changes and smaller sample sizes for certain race/Hispanic origin groups. The objective is to explore sex and race/Hispanic origin-specific childhood obesity trends.

Objective: To measure and compare CSF cytokine concentrations among horses with equine neuroaxonal dystrophy (eNAD)/equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy (EDM), horses with cervical vertebral stenotic myelopathy (CVSM), and control horses and to evaluate for associations with clinical parameters.
Methods: Banked equine CSF samples from horses with neurologic disease that underwent a complete neurologic examination and postmortem diagnosis confirmation of CVSM or eNAD/EDM or from control horses were included. Cytokines were measured with an equine-specific cytokine/chemokine magnetic bead multiplex panel (23-cytokine multiplex).

The complex relation between a person and their mental disorder is a recurring theme in (reflections on) psychiatric practice. As there is no uncontested concept of 'self', nor of 'mental disorder', the 'self-illness' relation is riddled with ambiguity. In this feature article, we summarise recent philosophical work on the phenomenon of 'self-illness ambiguity', to provide conceptual tools for psychiatric reflections on the self-illness relation.
