Article Abstract

Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening for fetal aneuploidy is typically offered from 10 weeks of gestational age (GA) onward. Fetal fraction (FF) enrichment may enable screening before 10 weeks with a low failure rate. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of cfDNA screening with in vitro enrichment before 10 weeks of gestation. 435 pregnant women were recruited between 7w0d and 9w6d of GA (EARLY samples) and scheduled for a second cfDNA sample after 11 weeks of GA (12w+ samples). 371 women provided both an EARLY and a 12w+ sample, and we compared cfDNA results between EARLY and 12w+ samples and sex at birth. For sex determination using cfDNA, EARLY, and 12w+ samples were 100% concordant with clinical sex at birth. In 170 male pregnancies, EARLY samples 5.9% had FF < 4% after enrichment. Seven aneuploidies were observed early, but eight at 12+ weeks (one false positive after invasive diagnostic testing). We observed 4.4% spontaneous abortions between the EARLY and 12w+ sampling. Our findings suggest that in vitro fetal enrichment provides sufficient cfDNA for reliable prenatal cfDNA screening results as early as 8 weeks, but one limitation lies in the high proportion of spontaneous abortions before 12w0d.

Pereskia aculeata Miller (OPN) is a cactus species whose mucilage (MOPN) is rich in arabinogalactan, giving it great technological potential for the encapsulation of different compounds. This study aimed to synthesize microparticles of MOPN and sodium alginate (ALG) for the encapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus. The microparticles, produced by ionic gelation, were then coated with whey protein concentrate (WPC), or chitosan (CHI), or left uncoated (UC).

Optical-based nanothermometry represents a transformative approach for precise temperature measurements at the nanoscale, which finds versatile applications across biology, medicine, and electronics. The assembly of ratiometric fluorescent 40 nm nanoparticles designed to serve as individual nanothermometers is introduced here. These nanoparticles exhibit unprecedented sensitivity (11% K) and temperature resolution (128 K Hz W cm), outperforming existing optical nanothermometers by factors of 2-6 and 455, respectively.

Background: Peri-implantitis poses a major challenge as contemporary nonsurgical treatments show dissatisfactory results and mucosal flap surgery is often needed. Diode lasers can remove granulation tissue and submucosal bacteria, and if it achieves similar clinical results, then it could be used as a less invasive first approach. The aim was to compare the healing of peri-implantitis lesions 6 months after treatment with either diode laser or conventional mucosal flap surgery.

Consumer acceptance of milk beverages as probiotic beverages is directly linked to their sensory qualities, such as flavor, consistency, visual appearance, and mouthfeel. Overall, products that exhibit syneresis are often viewed as inferior. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of high-intensity ultrasound on the production of probiotic strawberry beverages, aiming primarily to stabilize the beverage by reducing syneresis and improving sensory properties without compromising the viability of probiotic microorganisms.
