Article Abstract

Laccase-like nanozymes, as a significant category of nanozymes, have garnered considerable research attention. Studies primarily focused on the exploration of new nanozymes with laccase-like activity. However, in recent years, the diversity of small-molecule ligands (biological and abiotic) and the rapid advancement of pollutant sensing technologies have contributed to the growing interest in integrating laccase-like nanozymes into various novel analytical applications. This review summarized the laccase-like nanozymes prepared from copper and small-molecule ligands, especially the abiotic ligands over the last three years for the first time. The review further highlights novel intelligent analytical methods based on nanozymes in conjunction with emerging sensing technologies, such as machine learning-assisted sensor arrays, logic gates and time-temperature indicators. We propose possible future directions for the development of laccase-like nanozymes in the hope of deepening the understanding of laccase-like nanozymes by researchers in the fields of food safety, environmental management, etc., and enhancing the application potential of laccase-like nanozymes.

Self-reporting Cu clusterzyme acting as an ultra-small luminescent laccase for the catalytic detection of neurotransmitter epinephrine.

Anal Chim Acta

October 2025

State Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210096, PR China. Electronic address:

Mimicking the structure of natural laccase, we designed and synthesized a Cu-clusterzyme with Cu atom as the catalytic center, histidine and cysteine as the recognition unit and auxiliary fluorescence unit, respectively (denoted as Cys-His-CuNCs). Cys-His-CuNCs integrate the dual properties of laccase-like catalysis and fluorescence-sensing, and can simultaneously catalyze and detect the neurotransmitter epinephrine (EP). Cys-His-CuNCs exhibit a 44-fold higher catalytic activity than laccase.

Multi-enzymic nanozymes have attracted growing attention due to their distinct advantages over single enzyme-like nanozymes, particularly their synergistic effects and cascaded reactions. Herein, iron-doped carbon dots (FeCDs) were prepared by a one-step calcination method using hemin chloride, histidine, and potassium citrate as precursors. The resultant FeCDs exhibit a monodispersed spherical structure with an average particle size of 1.

Laccase-mimicking chiral Cu-nanozymes for enantioselective catalysis of phenolic substrates.

J Hazard Mater

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Resources, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, Jiangsu 214122, China. Electronic address:

Laccase-mimicking nanozymes showed huge prospects for the catalytic oxidation of numerous phenolic substrates. Some phenolic substrates exhibited distinct chirality, and it was still a great challenge to design laccase-mimicking chiral nanozymes with high enantioselectivity. Taking inspiration from the catalytic active sites of natural laccase, chiral Cu-based nanozymes with laccase-like activity were prepared by using different chiral ligands.

Peroxidase-laccase dual enzymatic activities of bovine serum albumin-copper hybrid nanoflowers for detecting ascorbic acid and degrading phenolic dyes.

September 2025

Department of BioNano Technology, Gachon University, 1342 Seongnamdae-ro, Sujeong-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi 13120, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Nanozymes have emerged as robust and cost-effective alternatives to natural enzymes; however, systems capable of mimicking multiple enzymatic activities remain limited. Here, we found that bovine serum albumin‑copper hybrid nanoflowers (BSA-Cu NFs) exhibit unique dual enzymatic activities of peroxidase and laccase, which can be utilized for detecting ascorbic acid and degrading phenolic dyes, respectively. Among various metals including Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe, Co, and Ca, BSA-Cu NFs showed the most defined flower-like morphology presumably because Cu ions exhibit a remarkable coordination ability toward the amine and amide groups of BSA.

August 2025

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing, Department of Biological and Energy Chemical Engineering, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, China University of Petroleum (East China), 66 Changjiang West Road, Qingdao 266580, China. Electronic address:

Hydrogel-based materials have emerged as promising candidates for wastewater remediation due to their remarkable adsorption capacity, recyclability, and environmental compatibility. In this study, we developed a multifunctional sodium alginate-glutaraldehyde-chitosan-gelatin (SGCG) composite hydrogel with enhanced mechanical properties and abundant functional groups (-COOH, -NH) for efficient Cu sequestration. Investigation of adsorption parameters revealed optimal conditions and underlying mechanisms for heavy metal removal.
