Humans are colonized by trillions of microbes that compose the human microbiome. Much of the microbiome inhabits the mucus layers. Mucus layers, covering digestive, reproductive, ocular, and respiratory tracts, are viscous networks consisting mainly of water and mucin glycoproteins. Mucins assemble into a dense, cross-linked network that can affect bacterial swimming patterns, and studying this behavior provides valuable insights into how the body regulates interactions with both harmful and beneficial microbes. Here we present the use of time-lapse imaging to track individual bacterial cells within mucin and discuss techniques for accurately extracting cell trajectory data from these images. By integrating theoretical and experimental approaches, we also describe how to quantify bacterial movement in terms of speed, persistence, and randomness.

Microalgae-bacteria symbiosis system is significant for sustainable and low-carbon wastewater treatment, with self-aggregation being key to its stable operation and effective pollutant removal. Cellular motility is the main driving force behind self-aggregation, crucial for symbiosis stability, but the characteristics and patterns involved still remain largely unexplored. Here, cellular movement dynamics into the microalgae-activated sludge model (ASM3) is incorporated, enabling synchronized simulation of metabolic activities and movement behaviors through physical and biochemical interactions in bioreactor systems.

Recent Findings: Refractory hepatic hydrothorax is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Allocation of Model for End-Stage Liver Disease exception points for patients with refractory hydrothorax was found to be associated with a significant reduction in post liver transplant mortality.

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for flexible wearable electronics; however, their facile fabrication remains challenging. This study presents an antifreeze, antibacterial, and conductive hydrogel constructed from biomacromolecules sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMCNa) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The hydrogel was synthesized via a simple one-pot method in an ethylene glycol/water (EG/H₂O) binary solvent system, incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) and clove essential oil (CEO), followed by a single freeze-thaw cycle.

Cattle are a reservoir for the zoonotic human foodborne pathogen Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), the causative agent of many disease outbreaks associated with contaminated fresh leafy greens. Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) housing cattle generate fugitive dust, however the potential risk of STEC movement by means of the aerosolized dust is not well known. In this investigation, we used metagenome sequencing of air samples collected in an agricultural setting to investigate airborne transfer of STEC from a large CAFO to the surrounding area.
