Article Abstract

Recent advances in shape-morphing materials have shown promise for soft robotics, but such mechanodynamic behavior has yet to be applied in sensing platforms, especially with true reversibility. Here, we introduce a monocomponent chitosan film fabricated via a simple, cost-effective solvent-casting method that exhibits extraordinary properties. This film not only shows instantly reversible shape-morphing but also displays a bidirectional response to alkaline solutions. Characterization techniques revealed structural and functional differences between chitosan powder and film, highlighting its unique responsiveness. The film rapidly undergoes dramatic, high-angle bending in water due to a spontaneous diffusive gradient, and this shape transformation can be programmed by adjusting the aspect ratio. Controlled locomotion was achieved by stabilizing the deformed shape in a transient state through a water-ethanol-water solvent exchange. Utilizing this solvent-responsiveness, we developed a proof-of-concept ″strip-on-a-drop″ chemo-mechanical sensor for alcohol detection. Programmed deformation and MATLAB-based image analysis provided reliable bending angles to quantify the alcohol content. This versatile film holds potential for on-demand shape control and innovative sensing applications.

In this study, we analyze InO thin-film transistors (InO-TFT) using synchrotron-based hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) in conditions. Achieving high performance nanoscale photonic functionalities remains extraordinarily challenging when using naturally derived biomaterials. The ability to manipulate ultrathin films of structural proteins─combined with photolithographic control of their polymorphism─unlocks a compelling route toward engineering biopolymer-based photonic crystals with precisely defined photonic bandgaps and reconfigurable structural colors. In this work, we describe a robust, water-based fabrication process for silk/inorganic hybrid one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals that overcomes many of the conventional difficulties in ensuring reproducibility, uniformity, and reliability at the nanoscale.

In this Special Issue of the Journal of Aging Studies, we endeavour to honor Roberta Maierhofer's inspiring scholarship by original research that addresses the intersections of age and gender in cultural Age/ing Studies and Critical Gerontology. From the perspective of feminist literary studies, Roberta Maierhofer introduced the term "anocriticism" in the late 1990s to analyze literature concerned with female aging processes. The contributions in this Special Issue bring together many different perspectives on the intersecting categories of age and gender, linking sociological perspectives to those of film and literary scholarship.

Despite having published seventeen novels, a good number of short stories, and scripts since she started her writing career at the end of the 1970s, academic work on Moggach's literary career has mainly dealt with her novel These Foolish Things (2004) and its film version The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011). This paper will focus on Moggach's last three novels in which the reader is guided by the voice of three women in their late sixties and seventies, namely Something to Hide (2015), The Carer (2019), and The Black Dress (2021). Following an already well-established body of criticism on representations of female ageing in fiction, this paper will argue that Moggach's last novels add nuance and richness to the representation of female ageing in the twenty-first century.
