Heavy metal ions, such as Cd, Hg, Pb, and As, tend to persist in soil without natural degradation and can be absorbed by crops, leading to the accumulation of agricultural products that pose a significant threat to human health. However, the development of a rapid and efficient technique for identifying heavy metals in agricultural products is essential to ensure health and safety. With the knowledge of the extent of damage caused by heavy metals, it becomes imperative to detect the presence of cadmium in the soil, water, and the environment. This study introduces a novel plate approach for quick and precise colorimetric detection of cadmium ions using the Cd(II)-Chrome Azurol S CAS-2,2'-dipyridyl dipy-Cetylpyridinium Bromide CPB quaternary complex. Our innovative method has shown that at a reaction solution pH of 11, the optimal concentration ratio is CAS (5 × 10 M): dipy (0.1 M): CPB (1.0 × 10 M) = 4 mL: 1 mL: 1 mL. The most significant fading alert was observed when the ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) chelator was added dropwise to the CAS detection plate, indicating strong chelation of Cd by EDTA. This laboratory-based study established a foundation for future applications in real environmental sample analysis.

The enantioselective construction of quaternary carbon stereocenters bearing amine functionalities represents a significant challenge in organic synthesis despite their prevalence in pharmaceutically active compounds. Herein, we report a versatile metallaphotoredox platform for the asymmetric incorporation of amine fragments onto quaternary carbons via coupling of alkene-tethered aryl bromides with readily available α-silylamines. This transformation proceeds under mild conditions without requiring organometallic reagents or stoichiometric reductants.

The increasing global demand for food and the adverse environmental impacts of excessive agrochemical use highlights the urgent need for sustainable and scalable seed treatment technologies. This paper reports a novel photothermal seed coating (QC@SCCNTs) with high biocompatibility, exceptional photothermal efficiency, and notable reusability, serving as an effective alternative to conventional chemical treatments. The coating consists of sericin-functionalized carboxylated carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) electrostatically complexed with quaternary ammonium chitosan (QC), forming a composite film (QS film).

We present the first interrupted Corey-Chaykovsky reaction of α,β-ynones by intercepting the zwitterionic intermediates that prevail during the addition of the Corey-Chaykovsky reagent to activated alkynes. This cascade transformation uncovers a novel mechanistic feature and leverages it to construct complex polycyclic molecular architectures featuring three new carbon-carbon bonds, four new carbo- and heterocycles and four contiguous stereocenters, two of which are quaternary carbons, all in a single-pot operation. Additionally, we demonstrate the synthetic utility of these otherwise unprecedented molecules.

Electrical discharge plasmas rapidly degrade short-chain (SC) per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the presence of sacrificial surfactants. These surfactants facilitate the transport of PFAS to the plasma-liquid interface through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, where PFAS and surfactants are ultimately degraded. This study investigates the degradation of perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS) by nonthermal plasma, both in the absence and presence of quaternary alkyl trimethylammonium surfactants: octyl-, dodecyl-, and hexadecyl trimethylammonium bromide (C8TAB, C12TAB, and C16TAB, respectively).

The Diels-Alder/cheletropic retro-[4+1] cycloadditions of thiophene S,S-dioxides are a prominent method for synthesizing unsaturated six-membered carbocycles. However, to the best of our knowledge, catalytic asymmetric variations of these reactions have not yet been achieved. Herein, we report Fe(III)-bis(oxazoline) complex-catalyzed inverse-electron-demand [4+2] cycloaddition/cheletropic retro-[4+1] extrusion of SO reactions between thiophene S,S-dioxides and 3-substituted indoles.
