Meta-analyses are powerful synthesis tools that are popular in ecology and evolution owing to the rapidly growing literature of this field. Although the usefulness of meta-analyses depends on their reliability, such as the precision of individual and mean effect sizes, attempts to reproduce meta-analyses' results remain rare in ecology and evolution. Here, we assess the reliability of 41 meta-analyses on sexual signals by evaluating the reproducibility and replicability of their results. We attempted to: (i) reproduce meta-analyses' mean effect sizes using the datasets they provided; (ii) reproduce meta-analyses' effect sizes by re-extracting 5703 effect sizes from 246 primary studies they used as sources; (iii) assess the extent of relevant data missed by original meta-analyses; and (iv) replicate meta-analyses' mean effect sizes after incorporating re-extracted and relevant missing data. We found many discrepancies between meta-analyses' reported results and those generated by our analyses for all reproducibility and replicability attempts. Nonetheless, we argue that the meta-analyses we evaluated are largely reproducible and replicable because the differences we found were small in magnitude, leaving the original interpretation of these meta-analyses' results unchanged. Still, we highlight issues we observed in these meta-analyses that affected their reliability, providing recommendations to ameliorate them.

Kobuviruses (family Picornaviridae, genus Kobuvirus) are enteric viruses that infect a wide range of both human and animal hosts. Much of the evolutionary history of kobuviruses remains elusive, largely due to limited screening in wildlife. Bats have been implicated as major sources of virulent zoonoses, including coronaviruses, henipaviruses, lyssaviruses, and filoviruses, though much of the bat virome still remains uncharacterized.

Research over the last 20 years has shed important light on the vocal behaviour of our closest living relatives, bonobos and chimpanzees, but mostly relies on qualitative vocal repertoires, for which quantitative validations are absent. Such data are critical for a holistic understanding of a species` communication system and unpacking how these systems compare more broadly with other primate and non-primate species. Here we make key progress by providing the first quantitative validation of a Pan vocal repertoire, specifically for wild bonobos.

The size and composition of local species pools are, in part, determined by past dispersal events. Predicting how communities respond to future disturbances, such as fluctuating environmental conditions, requires knowledge of such histories. We assessed the influence of a historical dispersal event on community assembly by simulating various scales of dispersal for 240 serpentine annual plant communities that experienced a large shift from drought to high rainfall conditions over three years.

Color polymorphism can influence the evolutionary fate of cryptic species because it increases populations' chances of survival in heterogenous or variable environments. Yet, little is known about the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms underlying the persistence of cryptic color polymorphisms, or the impact these polymorphisms have on the macroevolutionary dynamics of lineages. Here, we examine the evolutionary history of the most widespread cryptic color polymorphism in anurans, involving green and brown morphs.
