Lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) are an ancient group of fishes with complex life histories. We created a life cycle model that includes an R Shiny interactive web application interface to simulate abundance by life stage. This will allow scientists and managers to connect available demographic information in a framework that can be applied to questions regarding lamprey biology and conservation. We used Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) as a case study to highlight the utility of this model. We applied a global sensitivity analysis to explore the importance of individual life stage parameters to overall population size, and to better understand the implications of existing gaps in knowledge. We also provided example analyses of selected management scenarios (dam passage, fish translocations, and hatchery additions) influencing Pacific lamprey in fresh water. These applications illustrate how the model can be applied to inform conservation efforts. This tool will provide new capabilities for users to explore their own questions about lamprey biology and conservation. Simulations can hone hypotheses and predictions, which can then be empirically tested in the real world.

Droughts are increasing with climate change, affecting the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems and limiting their capacity to mitigate rising atmospheric CO levels. However, there is still large uncertainty on the long-term impacts of drought on ecosystem carbon (C) cycling, and how this determines the effect of subsequent droughts. Here, we aimed to quantify how drought legacy affects the response of a heathland ecosystem to a subsequent drought for two life stages of Calluna vulgaris resulting from different mowing regimes.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) among children and adolescents aged 9 to 19 years in Fengyang County, and to explore the associations of sleep duration and social jetlag with DED, with the aim of providing scientific evidence for sleep-based interventions to prevent DED in this population.
Methods: Between November and December 2023, 14 primary and secondary schools were randomly selected in Fengyang County, Chuzhou City, Anhui Province, China. Students from Grade 4 to Grade 12 (aged 9-19 years) were invited to participate.

Study Question: Do social determinants of health (SDoH) influence the age at menopause among women?
Summary Answer: In our study, adverse SDoH, particularly family low income-to-poverty ratio (PIR), low education level, and the marital status of being widowed, are associated with earlier age at menopause.
What Is Known Already: Some prior studies have considered certain SDoH variables (such as educational attainment and marital status) as potential factors influencing age at menopause, but systematic evidence clearly defining the relationship between multidimensional SDoH and menopausal age remains lacking.
Study Design Size Duration: This cross-sectional analysis included 6083 naturally menopausal women from 10 cycles (1999-2018) of the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and excluded cases of surgical menopause.

The role of cholesterol metabolism in antiviral immunity has been established, but if and how this cholesterol-mediated immunometabolism can be regulated by specific small molecules is of particular interest in the quest for novel antiviral therapeutics. Here, we first demonstrate that NPC1 is the key cholesterol transporter for suppressing viral replication by changing cholesterol metabolism and triggering the innate immune response via systemic analyses of all possible cholesterol transporters. We then use the Connectivity Map (CMap), a systematic methodology for identifying functional connections between genetic perturbations and drug actions, to screen NPC1 inhibitors, and found that bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BBAs) exhibit high efficacy in the inhibition of viral infections.

Background: Insulinoma, the most common type of pancreatic endocrine tumor, frequently induces hypoglycemia due to persistent hyperinsulinemia. Although Mi-Lnc70 expression progressively increases during pancreatic maturation in mice, the biological role of Mi-Lnc70 in pancreatic β cells remains elusive.
Aim: This study was designed to investigate the role of LncRNA-Mi-Lnc70 in the mouse pancreatic β-cell line MIN6.
