The architectural control of the self-assembly of a series of block polypeptides comprising a concatenation of an elastin-like peptide and a coiled-coil, bundle-forming peptide (ELP-BFPs), has been demonstrated. Assembly of the polypeptides is controlled by coacervation of the hydrophobic ELP domain, while the type of coiled-coil assembly of the BFP and the specific placement of short histidine tags significantly tunes assembly behavior. Spectrophotometric analysis of self-assembly demonstrated that the transition temperature of assembly can be controlled by the design of the BFP domain and positioning of the His-tags in the constructs. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy of assembled polypeptides confirmed distinct morphologies including core-shell particles and multilayer vesicles, depending on the parallel or antiparallel bundle architecture of the block polypeptide. The results have applications in materials design and highlight the potential for controlling multi-stimuli responsiveness and morphologies through fine control of the architectural features of the component polypeptide domains.

Conducted in a ventilated environmental chamber, the experiments investigated the emission characteristics of VOCs from dry and wet building materials, focusing on the influencing factors, such as temperature, relative humidity (RH), ventilation, and seasonality. The impact of influencing factors was quantified using a one-factor-at-a-time control method.

Vitamin D has been proposed to attenuate chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal mucositis (GM). In the intestine, local catabolism of active vitamin D [1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃] is mediated by the enzyme Cyp24a1. This study assessed whether deletion of Cyp24a1 specifically in intestinal epithelial cells can protect against 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced intestinal injury and microbiome disruption in mice.

Objective: To evaluate whether pretreatment strategies targeting the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as DNase I and low-frequency ultrasound, enhance the efficacy of successive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against Candida albicans biofilms and to assess the effects on biofilm components.
Methods: Forty-eight-hour C. albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms were treated under four conditions: (I) aPDT [Photodithazine (PDZ) (25 mg/L) for 20 min + Light-Emitting Diode (LED) (660 nm, 18 J/cm²)], (II) DNase+aPDT [5 min with 20 U/mL DNase I before aPDT], (III) sonication+aPDT [7 W, 170-190 J before aPDT], (IV) Dn+So+aPDT.

Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offer significant potential to transform medical microbiology diagnostics, improving pathogen identification, antimicrobial susceptibility prediction and outbreak detection. To address these opportunities and challenges, the ESCMID workshop, "Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Medical Microbiology Diagnostics", was held in Zurich, Switzerland, from June 2-5, 2025. The course featured expert lectures, practical sessions and panel discussions covering foundational ML concepts and deep learning architectures, data interoperability, quality control processes, model development and validation strategies.
