Objectives: Atherosclerosis of aortic wall has been suggested as a key pathological feature of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). We conducted a first-ever prospective cohort study aiming at assessing the sex-specific association between atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and risk of newly diagnosed AAA.
Methods: This study included 193,013 male and 226,785 female participants from the UK Biobank. AIP was calculated as a ratio of logarithmically transformed triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. The outcome of interest was new AAA, identified by ICD-10 and OPCS-4 code, or by AAA-related death. All analyses were sex-stratified: Multivariable Cox proportional-hazard models were employed to assess the association between baseline AIP and AAA risk. Harrell's c index was estimated to assess the value of AIP added to the discrimination of AAA prediction model.
Results: Over an average follow-up of 15.3 years, 1931 (1.00%) new AAA cases were recorded in males and 424 (0.19%) in females. In the fully adjusted models, compared with the bottom AIP quintile, HRs (95% CI) of newly diagnosed AAA was 1.67 (1.41, 1.96) in males and 1.75 (1.22, 2.52) in females within the top quintile. Subgroup analysis found smoking status significantly modified the association in females, with association existing only in female ever-smokers. Adding AIP into prediction model comprising age, smoking, and CVD history significantly improved the discrimination in males and male high-risk subgroups and in female ever-smokers (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: This study highlights the potential of AIP as a biomarker for AAA and its utility in identifying high-risk individuals qualified for AAA screening.

Objective: One of the most frequent neuropsychiatric complications after a stroke is poststroke depression (PSD). However, it is unclear whether disparities exist in PSD diagnosis. The authors examined a 10-year trend in PSD by socioeconomic and clinical characteristics.

Several approaches for synthesizing [1-C]2-oxoglutaric acid were attempted, and the synthesis was successfully achieved in 4 steps from trimethylsilyl C-cyanide. The C-breath tests on rats were conducted by orally administering the newly synthesized [1-C]2-oxoglutaric acid, the previously prepared [1'-C]citric acid, and [1-C]acetic acid as a control drug, and the results were compared. The results indicate that [1-C]2-oxoglutaric acid and [1'-C]citric acid may serve as potential substrates for assessing the TCA cycle flux.

Background: Previous studies have operationalized the NCCN list of high-risk medications in older adults into a measurable tool known as the Geriatric Oncology Potentially Inappropriate Medications (GO-PIMs) scale. The current study aims to evaluate the ability of GO-PIMs to identify high-risk medications and their impact on patients with both solid and liquid tumors managed in a large national health care system.
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study using data from the national Veterans Affairs (VA) Cancer Registry and electronic health records, including all veterans newly diagnosed with a solid or liquid malignancy from 2000 to 2022.

Genetic predisposition, inflammation, and oxidative stress are known contributors to the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). While genetic factors are non-modifiable, lifestyle, nutritional factors and oxidative stress may represent areas for intervention. This study aimed to assess biochemical markers of oxidative stress and evaluate dietary intake in women with newly diagnosed HT, identified through population-based screening.

This study aimed to histomorphometrically evaluate the effect of guided bone regeneration (GBR) and two implant surfaces on the thickness and height of newly formed bone in dehiscence defects around titanium implants. Three premolars and the first bilateral molar were extracted from ten adult mongrel dogs, and 40 buccal bone dehiscences measuring 5 mm in height and 4 mm in width were created using a University of North Carolina (UNC) periodontal probe to confirm the dimensions. Forty implants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: oxidized implant surfaces (OIS, n = 10), turned/machined implant surfaces (TIS, n = 10), OIS + GBR (n = 10), and TIS + GBR (n = 10).
