Article Abstract

The cowpea seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus, causes significant damage to stored grains of food legumes. Given the environmental and health hazards associated with synthetic fumigants and residual insecticides, there is an urgent need for safer alternatives. This study investigates the insecticidal potential of six different essential oils and their major components based binary mixtures activities against C. maculatus. The EOs were extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The insecticidal activity of each EO was evaluated by fumigation in vitro. The major components of the EOs showing significant insecticidal activity (1,8-cineole, carvacrol, pulegone, and eugenol) were evaluated individually and in sublethal binary mixtures to determine synergistic effects at a 1:1 ratio. Notably, the EO of R. officinalis exhibited the highest fumigant toxicity, with an LC of 29.06 µl/l air in males and 44.27 µl/l air in females at 48 h. The major components were more potent than the complete EOs, particularly 1,8-cineole (males: LC = 17.83 µl/l air and females: LC = 28.08 µl/l air at 48 h) and pulegone (males: LC = 23.04 µl/l air and females: LC = 38.25 µl/l air at 48 h). Binary combinations of these compounds were even more effective than single compounds, particularly the eugenol and carvacrol mixture, which resulted in 76.67% mortality in males and 63.33% in females at 48 h, and the 1,8-cineole and carvacrol combination, which produced 70.00% mortality in males and 60.00% in females. Interestingly, males C. maculatus were more susceptible to the treatments than females. These results highlight the potential of natural fumigants as environmentally friendly solutions for seed preservation and sustainable pest management.

Understanding the evaporation mechanism of liquid ethanol and ethanol-water binary mixtures is important for numerous scientific and industrial processes. The amount of water in liquid water-ethanol mixtures can significantly affect how quickly ethanol molecules evaporate. Here, we study the mechanism and rate of evaporation of ethanol from pure liquid ethanol and ethanol/water binary mixtures through both unbiased molecular dynamics simulations and biased simulations using the umbrella sampling method.

Varietal mixtures are a promising agro-ecological approach to stabilizing yields by reducing diseases. The effects of mixtures stem from modifications of epidemiological processes and underestimated plant-plant interactions, which could explain some of the paradoxical observations made in the field. However, the role of plant-plant interactions in modifying bread wheat and durum wheat susceptibility to Septoria tritici blotch remains to be elucidated.

Increasing evidences show the significance of low melting entropy in glass formation of substances. Our previous studies have uncovered the strong dependence between melting entropy in the eutectic mixtures and mixing enthalpy, which has been serving as an important reference for glass formation, showing that negative mixing enthalpy largely reduces the melting entropy. In this paper, we focused on the question as to how melting entropy is associated with another classical glass formation criterion of molecule/atom size difference of components.

The interactions between ethylcellulose (EC) and waxes in multicomponent oleogel systems are underexplored. This study investigated the structural, functional, and physiochemical properties of rice bran oil (RBO) oleogels structured with various ratios of EC and a binary wax blend (9:1 beeswax (BW): carnauba wax (CRW)), varied in 0.5 % w/w increments at a constant total gelator concentration of 4 % w/w.

Phosphorus is recognized as a major pollutant in municipal and domestic wastewater, but the effective removal of organic phosphorus (OP) using conventional wastewater treatment technologies is difficult. Herein, a novel visible light-enhanced Ti electrocoagulation (EC) technology was proposed for the removal of OP using 2-amino-ethyl phosphonic acid (AEP) as a model compound to elucidate the removal efficiency and mechanisms. The results showed that the irradiation under visible light (670 Lux) effectively enhanced the removal of AEP by Ti EC.
