Obesity is a multifactorial disease characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue, resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure. Mouse models have emerged as invaluable tools for elucidating the complex genetic, environmental, and physiological mechanisms driving to obesity. This chapter provides an overview of the methodologies employed to establish and study obesity in mice, highlighting their relevance to human disease.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is a severe condition characterized by chronic and recurrent depressive symptoms, leading to significant morbidity and a considerable socio-economic impact. Genetic and biological studies suggest that TRD is associated with distinct biological characteristics. In this study, we analysed whole-transcriptome differences in 293 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) to compare TRD (N = 150) vs non-TRD (N = 143) cases.

Probiotics are live beneficial microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts, have gained considerable scientific and commercial interest for their ability to support gut health, strengthen immunity, and reduce disease risk. This review traces the genesis of probiotic science from its origins in traditional fermented foods to contemporary clinical applications, offering a conceptual understanding of its evolution. A clear distinction is drawn between endogenous probiotics, naturally resident in the human microbiome, and exogenous probiotics, introduced via dietary supplements and functional foods.

Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery remains the gold standard of care to prevent myocardial ischemia in patients with advanced atherosclerosis; however, poor long-term graft patency remains a considerable and long-standing problem. Excessive vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation in the grafted tissue is recognized as central to late CABG failure. We previously identified SMILR, a human-specific SMC-enriched long noncoding RNA that drives SMC proliferation, suggesting that targeting SMILR expression could be a novel way to prevent neointima formation, and thus CABG failure.
