Article Abstract

We present a novel approach to achieving intrinsic optical bistability and multistability through the interplay between saturable and reverse saturable absorption. Our findings reveal that the stable points on the optical bistability curve align with the switching points of intensity-dependent nonlinear absorption. By analyzing the optical properties of a four-level cascade quantum system, we demonstrate that these switching behaviors can be triggered by applying laser fields to induce nonlinear absorption. Furthermore, we propose a comprehensive model to describe the intensity-dependent nonlinear absorption within this quantum system. Finally, it is shown that the optical bistability switches to the multistability when the detuning of applied fields exceeds the multi-photon resonance condition.

We achieve merging mirror-coupled bound states in the continuum (BICs) at THz frequency in the metasurface consisting of Si block arrays on an Au mirror with SiO as a spacer. Compared with the conventional mirror-coupled BIC, the merging BIC exhibits a higher Q-factor and local field enhancement at the same in-plane wavevector . Further, merging mirror-coupled BICs can combine the advantage of mirror-coupled BICs without breaking the symmetry of the nanostructure and the superiority of merging BICs, which is robust to imperfections of the nanostructure.

Nonlinear optics has become the workhorse for countless applications in classical and quantum optics, from optical bistability to single photon pair generation. However, the intrinsic weakness of optical nonlinearity and reciprocity of nonlinear interactions generally places stringent limits on the efficiency of nonlinear optical processes and their ability to be tailored for advanced applications in multimode systems. Here, motivated by recent advances in using non-Hermitian photonics and gain/loss engineering to enable non-reciprocal light transport, we explore how the interplay between non-Hermiticity and optical nonlinearity leads to a fundamentally new regime of nonlinear frequency conversion.

Observing non-classical properties of light is a long-standing interest to advance a wide range of quantum applications. Optical cavities are essential to generate and manipulate non-classical light. However, detecting changes in cavity properties induced by the quantum state remains a critical challenge in the optical domain due to the weak material nonlinearity.

Interlayer sliding symmetry breaking presents a powerful technique for achieving intrinsic multiferroic coupling among magnetism, ferroelectricity, and valley polarization, thereby establishing a new paradigm for the design of multifunctional devices. First-principles calculations unveil multiferroic coupling in 2D NbSiN. The monolayer exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state, where valley polarization is tuned by magnetic moment reversal.

We present a flexible scheme enabling reversible switching of topological states and dynamic modulation of optical bistability in a fixed micro-nano nonlinear optical system. The system realizes the optical modulation of reconfigurable topological edge states through phase transition-induced optical property changes in GeSbTe. The third-order nonlinear optical effects of the system are effectively enhanced by local field enhancement in the dual-band via reconfigurable topological edge states, which have a positive impact on the realization of dual-channel modulated optical bistability.
