Article Abstract

Objective: To compare the ablation efficacy and efficiency of flexible and navigable suction ureteric access sheath (FANS) and conventional ureteral access sheath (c-UAS) in retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) for kidney stones treatment.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective study of 96 patients who underwent RIRS using thulium fiber laser was performed. We divided the patients into Group 1: FANS and Group 2: c-UAS. We assessed the lithotripsy efficiency (mm/Joules), ablation efficacy (mm/min), and laser energy consumption (Joules/mm). The stone-free rate (SFR) was defined as the absence of stone fragments in a non-contrast abdominal computed tomography 4-weeks after the procedure.

Results: Both groups presented comparable stone volume (mm) and stone density. RIRS with FANS presented a significantly lower surgical time and laser energy consumption (10.9 vs. 12.1 Joules/mm, p < 0.001). In addition, FANS presented higher ablation efficiency (0.22 vs. 0.09 mm/Joules, p < 0.001) and ablation efficacy (26.1 vs. 19.9 mm/min, p < 0.001). SFR was significantly higher in the FANS group (93.7% vs. 75%, p < 0.001).

Conclusion: Compared to c-UAS, RIRS with FANS was associated with decreased total operative time and laser energy consumption and presented a significantly higher ablation efficacy and efficiency. Additionally, SFR was significantly higher in the FANS group.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors are widely used in gene therapy, particularly for liver-targeted treatments. However, predicting human-specific outcomes, such as transduction efficiency and hepatotoxicity, remains challenging. Reliable models are urgently needed to bridge the gap between preclinical studies and clinical applications.

The STING pathway has emerged as a therapeutic target in tumor immunotherapy due to its ability to induce interferon responses, enhance antigen presentation and activate T cells. Despite its therapeutic potential, STING pathway-based tumor immunotherapy has been limited by challenges in poor cellular delivery, rapid degradation of STING agonists, and potential systemic toxicity. Recently, advancements in nanotechnology have tried to overcome these limitations by providing platforms for more accurate and efficient targeted delivery of agonists, more moderate sustained STING pathway activation, and more efficient immune presentation and anti-tumor immune response.

Background: Candidiasis, predominantly caused by , poses a significant global health challenge, especially in tropical regions. Nystatin is a potent antifungal agent that is hindered by its low solubility and permeability, limiting its clinical efficacy.

Methods: This study aimed to investigate the potential of a layer-by-layer (LBL) coating system, employing chitosan and alginate, to improve the stability, entrapment efficiency (%EE), and antifungal efficacy of nystatin-loaded liposomes against Candida albicans.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, the incidence of which continues to rise globally, and existing therapeutic options are limited by low drug bioavailability and systemic side effects. In this study, we systematically investigated the challenges of the special gastrointestinal environment of UC patients for oral drug delivery, such as extreme pH, degradation by digestive enzymes, metabolism of intestinal flora and obstruction of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and summarized the potential of plant-derived Exosome-like Nanovesicles (PELNs) as a novel delivery system. PELNs are produced by plant cells and mainly consist of proteins, RNA, lipids and plant active molecules.

With the intensification of population aging, sarcopenia in older adults has become a significant public health issue affecting quality of life. Sarcopenia is a progressive and systemic skeletal muscle disorder characterized by reduced muscle mass, decreased muscle strength, and diminished physical function. Although conventional exercise interventions have shown some efficacy in managing sarcopenia, their effects are limited and often insufficient to effectively halt disease progression.
