The upper respiratory tract (URT) microbiota plays a role in both acute and chronic respiratory health outcomes and consists of multiple ecologically distinct niches, all of which have low bacterial biomass. Here, we present a protocol for microbial profiling of low-biomass URT samples. We describe steps for collecting, storing, and extracting DNA. We then detail procedures for performing 16S rRNA sequencing, using an Illumina MiSeq platform, to characterize microbial communities. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Odendaal et al..

Background: Sinusitis is a common respiratory infection increasingly associated with antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, posing significant treatment challenges. The emergence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in sinus infections necessitates comprehensive profiling of resistance patterns to guide effective therapy.

Background Of The Study: known for its bioactive phytochemicals and antimicrobial potential; however, studies evaluating its outcome on the color, mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity of 3D-printed provisional dental resins are lacking. So this study evaluate the effect of seed extract incorporation on the color assessment, flexural strength, compressive strength, microhardness and antimicrobial activity of 3D-printed provisional crown and bridge resin.
Materials And Methods: A total of 240 samples were prepared, with 60 samples allocated to four groups based on 0 %, 1.

Foodborne diseases pose a significant public health challenge worldwide. The increasing availability of edible oils in the market, combined with Ethiopia's lack of stringent quality control and regulatory oversight, raises concerns about their safety. This inadequacy in regulation may contribute to microbial contamination, leading to potential public health risks.

Freezing point depression due to high salt concentration is crucial for liquid water to exist on cold worlds, expanding special regions where habitats are plausible. Determination of the growth tolerances of terrestrial microbes in analog systems impacts planetary protection protocols aimed at preventing interference with life detection missions or potential native ecosystems on celestial bodies. We measured the salinity tolerances of 18 salinotolerant bacteria (Bacillus, Halomonas, Marinococcus, Nesterenkonia, Planococcus, Salibacillus, and Terribacillus).

Global efforts to standardise methodologies benefit greatly from open-source procedures that enable the generation of comparable data. Here, we present a modular, high-throughput nucleic acid extraction protocol standardised within the Earth Hologenome Initiative to generate both genomic and microbial metagenomic data from faecal samples of vertebrates. The procedure enables the purification of either RNA and DNA in separate fractions (DREX1) or as total nucleic acids (DREX2).
