Article Abstract

Literature on the location and contextual features of drinking events (i.e., physical context) remains scant and underdeveloped. This study developed and provided preliminary validation of a measure typical physical drinking contexts. Participants ( = 1,642) self-reported their typical physical drinking context (via items generated), their drinking behavior, demographics, and typical social drinking context. Three samples (total = 1,642) assessed factor structure, measurement invariance, and validity testing. Factor analyses suggested a four-factor structure, indicative of high arousal private (e.g., at a large house party), high arousal public (e.g., at a concert), low arousal private (e.g., at home), and low arousal public (e.g., on a date) contexts. Measurement invariance was established across sex, race/ethnicity, and drinking frequency, and convergent and discriminant validity was evaluated via bivariate correlations with social/solitary drinking frequency. High arousal contexts were associated with heavier/binge drinking, whereas high arousal private contexts and low arousal contexts were associated with greater negative consequences. Relations between high arousal contexts and heavier drinking remained above and beyond the overall drinking frequency and social context items. Findings lay the framework for future validation and longitudinal/diary studies to test how (and for whom) relations between physical drinking contexts and drinking behavior operate.

Rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) has historically been associated with anecdotal 'creative insights', possibly due to the fantastical and ostensibly illuminating nature of its associated phenomena (dreams). REMS, characterised by rapid eye movements, muscle atonia, and high-energy neuronal activity, has been linked to memory consolidation and information processing, particularly regarding the formation of novel associations or reintegration of consolidated memories into new cognitive networks. However, studies in these domains have largely used methodology which deprived subjects (animal or human) of REMS, rather than enhanced it.

This study compared symptom reporting and cognitive test performance within 72 h of a suspected concussion between high school student-athletes with and without pre-injury self-reported mental health treatment. Eight hundred seventy-nine high school athletes with ( = 75) and without ( = 804) a self-reported history of treatment for anxiety or depression underwent preseason baseline testing, and post-injury testing within 72 h of suspected concussion. At baseline, adolescents with a self-reported history of treatment for anxiety or depression ( = 75, 8.

Norepinephrine (NE) is a key neuromodulator in the brain with a wide range of functions. It regulates arousal, attention, and the brain's response to stress, enhancing alertness and prioritizing relevant stimuli. In the auditory domain, NE modulates neural processing and plasticity in the auditory cortex by adjusting excitatory-inhibitory balance, tuning curves, and signal-to-noise ratio.

Waste biomass has aroused increasing interest in the production of low-cost materials for CO adsorption and supercapacitors. One of the primary facets in this regard is to develop nanoporous carbons with controlled porosity and high surface area. Herein, waste wood chips are used to synthesize nanoporous biocarbons via a solid-state KOH-based chemical activation.

Background: Although opioid analgesics may influence sleep in patients with chronic pain, the association between strong opioid use and sleep characteristics remains unclear. This study aimed to explore differences in sleep status among chronic pain patients with varying levels of opioid use.

Methods: A total of 29 patients with chronic non-cancer pain who had been under treatment for more than 6 months were included.
