Article Abstract

Introducing the concept of topology into material science has sparked a revolution from classic electronic and optoelectronic devices to topological quantum devices. The latter has potential for transferring energy and information with unprecedented efficiency. Here, we demonstrate a topological diode effect on the surface of a three-dimensional material, SmB[Formula: see text], a candidate topological Kondo insulator. The diode effect is evidenced by pronounced rectification and photogalvanic effects under electromagnetic modulation and radiation at radio frequency. Our experimental results and modeling suggest that these prominent effects are intimately tied to the spatially inhomogeneous formation of topological surface states (TSS) at the intermediate temperature. This work provides a manner of breaking the mirror symmetry (in addition to the inversion symmetry), resulting in the formation of [Formula: see text]-junctions between puddles of metallic TSS. This effect paves the way for efficient current rectifiers or energy-harvesting devices working down to radio frequency range at low temperature, which could be extended to high temperatures using other topological insulators with large bulk gap.

Local Symmetry Breaking and Hidden Spin Polarization in 2D Hybrid Perovskites with Nonprimary Ammonium Cations.

Two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) have attracted interest as potential platforms for spin-optoelectronic technologies, including spin filtering and polarized light-emitting diodes. When coupling 2DHPs with strong spin-orbit coupling effects, inversion symmetry breaking has often provided an effective indicator/descriptor for screening spintronic materials within the vast prospective organic-inorganic compositional space. Despite the importance of global symmetry, recent studies have revealed that hidden physical effects such as spin and valley polarization can arise due to local symmetry breaking within 2DHP structures that maintain global inversion symmetry.

We report the direct generation of wavelength-versatile Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes with positive and negative topological charge at cyan (490 nm), green (523 nm), orange (605 nm), red (637 nm), and deep red (697 nm) wavelengths from a diode pumped Pr-doped water-proof fluoro-aluminate glass (Pr: WPFG) fiber laser. Key to effective wavelength selection and optimization was the inclusion and axial displacement of an intra-cavity lens which induces strong chromatic aberration. We anticipate that this ultra-compact, visible LG mode fiber laser source will facilitate new methodologies and techniques in super-resolution fluorescent microscopy and laser nano/micro-fabrication.

Perfect Superconducting Diode Effect in Altermagnets.

Phys Rev Lett

Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Box 516, S-751 20 Uppsala, Sweden.

We investigate intrinsic superconducting diode effect in the unconventional superconducting state of d-wave altermagnets. We find large diode efficiencies in the wide-reaching finite-momentum pairing regimes of the phase diagram. Remarkably, even perfect diode efficiency of 100% can be obtained in the presence of an external magnetic field.

The design and fabrication of dual-function molecular materials that integrate triboelectric performance with photocatalytic activity represent a promising method to achieve selective self-powered detoxification of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Herein, we developed a feasible and controllable strategy for the same by coalescing isomorphic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different central metal valence states as photocatalysts and triboelectric layers to construct a self-powered photocatalytic detoxification system with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as a power source. An anionic framework Cu-MOF () underwent a reversible valence conversion, forming a topologically equivalent isomorphic and neutral mixed-valent framework CuCu-MOF () via a single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) redox process.

Self-Field-Induced Josephson Diode Effect.

Nano Lett

Materials Department, University of California, Santa Barbara, California 93106-5050, United States.

Josephson diodes are of interest for nonlinear superconducting circuit elements, which have many applications such as in solid-state qubit readout and coupling. Many different mechanisms can give rise to Josephson diode effects (JDEs). In this work, we investigate JDEs generated by the self-field of the supercurrent in the junction.
