Article Abstract

This study develops a physics-informed neural network (PINN) model to predict stress distribution in a simplified spinal disc structure. The model incorporates 3D spatial inputs and enforces equilibrium conditions through a custom loss function. Trained on synthetic elasticity-based data, it achieves an MAE of 0.026 and an R² of 74.6%. Stress patterns under various loading conditions were visualized, with peak stress occurring at = 1 under top compression. Results demonstrate PINNs' potential for biomechanical modeling, improving predictive accuracy in spinal biomechanics and informing clinical interventions.

Purpose: The spinal surgery robot can provide precise preoperative or intraoperative surgical planning and guide the implementation of the surgical plan under real-time navigation monitoring. Researchers have recently begun exploring the use of robotic systems to assist in performing Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD). However, prior studies have primarily focused on robotic-assisted transforaminal puncture.

Study DesignRetrospective cohort study.ObjectiveIn patients with multilevel degenerative lumbar pathology, the decision to extend fusion across all decompressed levels remains a subject of debate. While fusion provides stability in cases of instability or deformity, its necessity for adjacent levels without specific fusion indications is unclear.
