Article Abstract

Profiling of secondary metabolites within Fragaria sp. (strawberry), Rubus sp. (raspberries and blackberries), and Ribes sp. (blackcurrants and redcurrants) is of key importance with respect to the nutritional (antioxidant) benefits associated with a range of polyphenol classes within such fruits and how they vary between growth environment and season, as well as their deployment as quantitative trait loci (QTL) within breeding populations. This chapter presents an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) approach applying aqueous functionalized C18 chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (MS) for the characterization and relative quantification of a wide range of polyphenols such as the pelargonidins, being rich in strawberry; cyanidins, procyanidins, and anthocyanins, being rich in raspberry; and delphinidins and prodelphinidins, being particularly rich in blackcurrant, as well as a range of colorless flavonoids, and amino and organic acids.

Plantar melanomas present unique diagnostic and surgical challenges owing to substantial regional variations in skin thickness. Although the Breslow thickness remains the primary criterion for staging and surgical excision, its application on plantar melanoma is complicated by the inherent thickness of the glabrous plantar epidermis, which may lead to tumor depth overestimation. Accurate assessment of plantar skin thickness is essential for optimizing staging accuracy and refining surgical margins.

Introduction: Vision language models (VLMs) combine image analysis capabilities with large language models (LLMs). Because of their multimodal capabilities, VLMs offer a clinical advantage over image classification models for the diagnosis of optic disc swelling by allowing a consideration of clinical context. This work elucidates the thermo-kinetics of the thermal conversion of cameroonian kaolin to metakaolin as the main product. The thermokinetical parameters (activation energy and pre-exponential factor ) for the kaolin conversion were calculated using model-free methods, the Kissinger-Akahira-Sunrose (KAS) and the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, and differential methods (Kissinger and Ozawa) additionally including iterative procedures for KAS and FWO methods (KAS-Ir; FWO-Ir). The cameroonian kaolin was heat-treated using three different heating rates, 5, 20 and 40 K min, leading to metakaolin samples named MK-(5), MK-(20) and MK-(40).
