Article Abstract

Speech production engages a distributed network of cortical and subcortical brain regions. The supplementary motor area (SMA) has long been thought to be a key hub in coordinating across these regions to initiate voluntary movements, including speech. We analyzed direct intracranial recordings from 115 patients with epilepsy as they articulated a single word in a subset of trials from a picture-naming task. We aimed to characterize the temporal dynamics of SMA relative to other cortical regions. SMA and preSMA were among the first regions to activate after cue onset, peaked in activity before articulation onset, and were the earliest regions to predict trial-to-trial response time. Neural activity at single electrodes in SMA and preSMA was closely associated with speech initiation; activity began at a highly predictable time after stimulus onset and extended until speech onset for any given trial. Our results support the idea that SMA is a key node in the speech initiation network.

Background:  Small infants face more developmental risks than their full-term peers, necessitating early intervention and long-term monitoring.

Objectives:  This study examined the longitudinal developmental and hearing outcomes of small infants attending a high-risk clinic in a South African low-income community setting.

Method:  A short-term longitudinal within-subject descriptive study design was employed, where 28 participants underwent hearing and developmental screenings and assessments at two follow-up appointments (T1 and T2), at 6- and 12-month corrected age.

Rationale: Primary polydipsia refers to excessive water intake due to psychogenic or non-psychogenic causes without being secondary to conditions such as hyperglycemia or renal dysfunction. Most cases of primary polydipsia are psychogenic in nature, with few cases of non-psychogenic primary polydipsia reported in the literature. In this case, the patient's excessive water intake appeared to be influenced by both psychogenic and non-psychogenic factors.

Purpose: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that can limit children's academic and social participation, with negative consequences for overall well-being. Previous studies have described visual biofeedback as a promising option for RSSD, but results have been inconclusive due to study design limitations and small sample sizes.

Method: In a preregistered randomized controlled trial, 108 children aged 9-15 years with RSSD affecting American English /ɹ/ were randomly assigned to receive treatment incorporating visual biofeedback (subdivided into ultrasound and visual-acoustic types) or a comparison condition of motor-based treatment consistent with current best practices in speech therapy.
