HO and CO Sorption in Ion-Exchange Sorbents: Distinct Interactions in Amine Versus Quaternary Ammonium Materials.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

September 2025

The Steve Sanghi College of Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona 86011, United States.

This study investigates the HO and CO sorption behavior of two chemically distinct polystyrene-divinylbenzene-based ion exchange sorbents: a primary amine and a permanently charged strong base quaternary ammonium (QA) group with (bi)carbonate counter anions. We compare their distinct interactions with HO and CO through simultaneous thermal gravimetric, calorimetric, gas analysis, and molecular modeling approaches to evaluate their performance for dilute CO separations like direct air capture. Thermal and hybrid (heat + low-temperature hydration) desorption experiments demonstrate that the QA-based sorbent binds both water and CO more strongly than the amine counterparts but undergoes degradation at moderate temperatures, limiting its compatibility with thermal swing regeneration.

Hippophae salicifolia, commonly known as sea buckthorn, is native to the Indian Himalayan region. This study is the first to comprehensively assess the phytochemical profile and biological activities of H. salicifolia leaves extracted through maceration, infusion, and percolation (Soxhlet apparatus) methods.

Background: The study aimed to adapt a stress and well-being intervention delivered via a mobile health (mHealth) app for Latinx Millennial caregivers. This demographic, born between 1981 and 1996, represents a significant portion of caregivers in the United States, with unique challenges due to higher mental distress and poorer physical health compared to non-caregivers. Latinx Millennial caregivers face additional barriers, including higher uninsured rates and increased caregiving burdens.

Background And Aims: Crop wild relatives (CWRs) are key resources for enhancing agricultural resilience, providing genetic traits that can improve pest resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, and nutritional composition in domesticated crops. Within the mustard family (Brassicaceae) this is especially significant in the Brassiceae tribe, which includes economically important genera for agriculture such as Brassica and Sinapis. However, while breeding programmes have historically focused on major crops within this tribe, the potential of their wild relatives, particularly for underutilised and minor crops, remains insufficiently explored.

Incorporating bioaccessibility into health risk assessments enhances the accuracy of exposure estimates for heavy metal (HM) pollution, supports targeted remediation, and informs public health and policy decisions, particularly for vulnerable populations. Because HM bioaccessibility depends on local soil and geographic characteristics, identifying its relationship with soil properties is crucial for assessing soil pollution potential. Although HM concentrations can be measured relatively easily, bioaccessibility requires complex laboratory procedures, limiting routine applications in regulatory contexts.
