A rapid, simple, and accurate voltammetric method for quantifying total inorganic arsenic in rice was described in this work. The simplified sample pretreatment involved the addition of a mixed solution of nitric acid and L-cysteine, which facilitated the simultaneous extraction and speciation of arsenic (As(III)). To eliminate interference from complex rice matrices, magnetic composites were employed to absorb copper and other potential interference. Furthermore, As(III) was detected using linear stripping voltammetry with screen-printed electrodes modified in-situ with gold nanoparticles and L-cysteine, enhancing both sensitivity and selectivity. With this strategy, the methodology demonstrated good resistance to interference and high sensitivity, with a detection limit of 0.018 mg/kg. A comparative analysis between this method and liquid chromatography coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) showed a good correlation with an R of 0.995. Additionally, the method was successfully applied to determine total inorganic arsenic in commercial rice samples, yielding satisfactory results.

Azo dyes, prevalent in various industries, including textile dyeing, food, and cosmetics, pose significant environmental and health risks due to their chemical stability and toxicity. This study introduces the synthesis and application of a copper hydrogen-π-bonded benzoate framework (Cu-HBF) and its derived marigold flower-like copper oxide (MFL-CuO) in a synergetic adsorption-photocatalytic process for efficiently removing cationic azo dyes from water, specifically crystal violet (CV), methylene blue (MB), and rhodamine B (RhB). The Cu-HBF, previously available only in single crystal form, is prepared here as a crystalline powder for the first time, using a low-cost and facile procedure, allowing its application as an adsorbent and also serving as a precursor for synthesizing well-structured copper oxide (MFL-CuO).

Rice is consumed by ∼50% of the global population, grown primarily in flooded paddy fields, and is susceptible to arsenic accumulation. Inorganic arsenic, particularly in reduced form (As(III)), is considered the most toxic and is more likely to accumulate in rice grains under flooded systems. We postulate that increased levels of highly reactive iron minerals, such as ferrihydrite, in paddy soils can regulate the bioavailability of arsenic and reduce its uptake by priming iron plaque formation.

Total diet studies monitor exposure to contaminants from food. This study investigates the intakes of the harmful metals silver (Ag), aluminium (Al), arsenic (As), inorganic As, cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) in Swedish young children, adolescents and adults, and relate them to health-based guidance values (HBGV). Whereas intakes of Ag and Al did not give rise to any concern for adverse health effects, most of the young children had intakes of inorganic As (≥97%), Cd (≥71%) and Ni (≥92%, for acute effects) above the HBGV set by European Food Safety Authority.
