Article Abstract

Contemporary societies exhibit delayed reproductive age and increased life expectancy. While the male reproductive system demonstrates relatively delayed aging compared to that of females, increasing age substantially impacts its function. A characteristic manifestation is age-induced testosterone decline. Testosterone, a crucial male sex hormone, plays pivotal roles in spermatogenesis and sexual function, and contributes significantly to metabolism, psychology, and cardiovascular health. Aging exerts profound effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and Leydig cells, precipitating testosterone reduction, which adversely affects male health. Exogenous testosterone supplementation can partially ameliorate age-related testosterone deficiency; however, its long-term safety remains contentious. Preserving endogenous testosterone production capacity during the aging process warrants further investigation as a potential intervention strategy.

Extending healthy lifespans is an important public health goal in societies with a long life expectancy. Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH), a condition associated with an age-related decrease in testosterone level, contributes to the onset of various diseases. Previously, we demonstrated that the oral ingestion of bean sprouts rich in the HASPIN inhibitor coumestrol increased blood testosterone levels in mice.

The sub-chronic testicular toxicity of nitrate in immature and mature albino rats and its amelioration with ascorbic acid and curcumin was studied. Rats were divided into five groups: control, nitrate, nitrate + ascorbic acid, nitrate + curcumin and nitrate + ascorbic acid + curcumin. Nitrate at 250 mg/L in drinking water and ascorbic acid and curcumin at 100 mg/kg body weight were provided to rats for 42 days.

Background: Sarcopenia is defined by the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, with an impaired regenerative capacity of satellite cells (SCs). Despite their recognized importance in muscle regeneration, human model-based studies on SCs in sarcopenia are still lacking, limiting our understanding of their role in age-related muscle loss. Here, we aimed to develop a sarcopenia model using human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs)-derived skeletal muscle organoids (hSkMOs) and prevent the sarcopenia progression by testosterone treatment.

From sex hormone decrease to hormonal treatment: impacts on cardiovascular risk with ageing.

Ageing plays a critical role in the deterioration of artery function and structure, and clearly represents the first cardiovascular (CV) risk factor in men but also in women. Coronary and cerebral arteries are particularly prone to atheroma, and the tissues they perfuse are particularly vulnerable to ischaemia. In both sexes, the age-related decrease in sex hormones (menopause and andropause) has deleterious effects on CV health.

Klotho-gonadal hormone crosstalk in male and female reproduction.

Fertility and sexual performance are directly related to the amounts of gonadal hormones. Gonadal hormones, fertility, and sexual function decrease with age. Klotho, an age-related protein, plays a role in reproduction and sex hormone-related diseases by regulating the amount and function of gonadal hormones.
