Background: Depression is generally perceived from the perspective of the common-cause disease model. However, the network perspective assumes mutual influence of individual symptoms and stresses the importance of investigating symptom dynamics. Gaining a better understanding of symptom dynamics within individuals might contribute to more effective treatments.
Methods: Current exploratory longitudinal research studied the associations and directionality between 43 symptoms from the generic questionnaire Symptom Questionnaire-48 (SQ-48) using dynamic time warp (DTW) analyses, in which trajectories with similar time-dependent patterns can be identified. Data from individuals were analysed first, yielding distance matrices for all symptom trajectories, after which the data were aggregated.
Results: The 148 included patients were all admitted for the treatment of their clinical depression. Undirected DTW analyses of three patients with longer time series but otherwise randomly chosen showed large variability among individuals. Group-level undirected DTW analyses showed numerous significant edges between symptoms, largely clustering symptoms according to the eight pre-existing subscales of the SQ-48. Group-level directed DTW analyses showed five symptoms with significant outstrength: 'hopeless', 'restless', 'down/depressed', 'feeling tense' and 'no enjoyment', meaning that change in these key symptoms preceded change in other symptoms.
Limitations: The 43 included symptoms of the SQ-48 primarily focus on internalizing problems in severely depressed inpatients, potentially limiting generalizability.
Conclusions: DTW networks provided us with five key symptoms based on the dynamics of symptom scores. Future studies could explore whether process-based therapy targeted at symptoms with high outstrength might result in more effectivity as part of personalized treatment.

Purpose: Connectivity analyses of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) static images provide a valuable means of investigating brain network organization by capturing metabolic activity at rest. Graph theory is emergently applied to model these networks at individual level; however, the choice of graph construction method can significantly impact analytical outcomes.
Methods: In this study, we systematically evaluate and compare methods for building individual graphs from FDG-PET images in healthy control subjects.

Background: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a complex, chronic condition affecting the urinary bladder. Symptoms commonly associated with IC/BPS include painful urination, pain during intercourse, a persistent or recurrent sensation of bladder discomfort or pressure that often worsens as the bladder fills and eases after urination, urgency, frequent urination with little warning, nighttime urination disrupting sleep, and burning or other unusual urinary sensations. These symptoms can profoundly impact emotional and mental health, hinder participation in daily activities, disrupt social interactions, and strain personal relationships.

A more inclusive approach for addressing the diverse spectrum of mental health experiences is needed. Network theory frames psychopathological complaints as complex dynamic systems, that can be modelled in a network of mutually interacting symptoms. These networks may provide important markers of symptom improvement or exacerbation, and inform strategies for early intervention and treatment.

The present study offers a new method for analyzing the bioluminescence kinetics generated by the toxicity-triggered bioluminescent bacterial mutant strain TV1061 to detect and differentiate heavy metals in water samples. Specifically, as a proof-of-concept, copper and mercury were used, in single and binary mixtures, to induce the grpE heatshock promoter generating a measurable signal. The research employed the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm to analyze the overall bioluminescence signal generated by the bacteria, rather than focusing on specific signal components, such as the response ratio.
