Introduction: Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut bacteria-dependent metabolite associated with poor cardiovascular health. Exercise is a known cardioprotective activity but the impact of an acute bout of exercise on TMAO production is unknown.
Objectives/methods: This study assessed choline-derived production of TMAO following a single bout of intermittent exercise in a young, healthy cohort.
Results: Choline supplemented after either exercise or a time-matched resting period demonstrated a similar increase in circulating TMAO across an 8-hour period.
Conclusion: This suggests that a single bout of intermittent exercise does not alter gut microbial metabolic behaviour and thus does not provide additional cardioprotective benefits related to blood levels of TMAO.

Background: Global reports indicate that less than 20% of 11-17-year-olds meet physical activity recommendations, and while organized sports participation increases the likelihood of meeting these guidelines, no other studies were found that examined the impact on well-being and physical fitness outcomes among Danish adolescents based on participation in leisure time sports.
Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional design, assessing cardiorespiratory fitness, fat percentage, and well-being, as well as several other health and fitness outcomes among 1,333 Danish adolescents (50% girls). Differences between participants in organized sports and non-participants, as well as between participants in different sport categories were assessed through ANCOVA analysis.

This study identified the time course of attaining meaningful improvement in 6-minute walk distance and patient-reported outcome measures during a 6-month supervised exercise intervention in people with peripheral artery disease.
Methods: Participants with peripheral artery disease were randomized to supervised treadmill exercise 3 time weekly or a nonexercise control group for 6 months.

Background: Psychological distress has been linked with later cognitive impairment and dementia, although the nature of the association remains unclear. Using a multi-cohort approach, we examined longitudinal associations of psychological distress with subsequent cognition and dementia, testing whether findings varied by age of assessment, severity, and persistence of psychological distress.
Methods: We used five longitudinal studies: Caerphilly Prospective Study, English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, National Child Development Study, National Survey of Health and Development, and Whitehall II.
