Article Abstract

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) incidence in Switzerland is rising due to factors like migration and globalization. The aim of this work was to investigate CL frequency in Switzerland and identify clinical and histopathological difficulties in diagnosing CL in a non-endemic country.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study evaluated the clinical and histopathological characteristics of all CL cases from two dermatopathology laboratories between 2000 and 2022. Skin biopsies were histopathologically reviewed using HE, Giemsa, and immunohistochemical stain for CD1a and a specific Leishmania antibody (LA). PCR to detect Leishmania DNA was performed if sufficient tissue was available.

Results: 42 cases (27 m, 15 f) were included. The correct clinical diagnosis of CL was only made in 15 (35.7%) cases. In seven (16.6%) cases, CL was missed in the initial histopathologic evaluation. Two main histopathological patterns were observed: granulomatous and pseudolymphomatous. Immunohistochemical staining with CD1a and Leishmania-specific antibody was positive in 91% and 80% of cases, respectively. Leishmania PCR was positive in 25 of 26 cases, mainly detecting Old World species.

Conclusions: CL is rare in Switzerland and often misdiagnosed clinically and histopathologically. CD1a and specific Leishmania antibody stainings are useful. CL should be considered in non-healing ulcers, even without a history of travel to endemic areas.

Histological analysis is a method commonly used in medical clinics to evaluate biological tissues and their abnormalities. However, this method is based on tissue collected from the necropsy of the animal, where modifications in the tissue associated with autolysis can occur after death. This study analyses the post-mortem histomorphological changes in white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) after euthanasia by clove oil anaesthesia induction and pithing as a secondary killing method.

Department of Internal Medicine, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Istanbul University, 34093, Istanbul, Turkey.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder that may clinically and histologically resemble IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD), especially in the presence of IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration. In this case, a 69-year-old woman with generalized lymphadenopathy, constitutional symptoms, and elevated IgG4 levels was initially suspected to have IgG4-RD based on core needle biopsy. However, further evaluation with excisional lymph node biopsy revealed emperipolesis and S100-positive histiocytes, confirming the diagnosis of RDD.

The spindle cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is exceptionally rare and poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its morphological overlap with other spindle cell lesions of the thyroid. We report a novel case of spindle cell variant PTC in a 66-year-old woman presenting with a TI-RADS 4 thyroid nodule, initially classified as Bethesda III on fine-needle aspiration. Histopathological examination revealed a biphasic tumor composed predominantly of bland spindle cells arranged in solid sheets and fascicles, admixed with entrapped thyroid follicles.

Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (hHPV) infection, especially HPV-16, plays a central role in the development of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of co-testing (cytology and hHPV detection) in a real-world cohort of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) living with HIV. We conducted a prospective study (2017-2023) at a tertiary care center in Spain.

Objective: Present study aimed to determine the demographic, epidemiological and pathological features of human cystic echinococcosis (CE) cases using patients' hospital based clinical history from 2012-2023.

Methods: The current retrospective study was conducted from June-December and aimed to investigate the incidence of human CE in Pakistan. A total of 74 surgically confirmed patients' data was retrieved from the hospital records.
