Upholding dignity during a pandemic Twitter.

F1000Res

March 2024

LIFE Research Institute, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario, K1N 6N5, Canada.

This article investigates how people invoked the concept of dignity on Twitter during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a secondary focus on mentions of dignity in the context of older adults and ageing. We report the results of a study that combines text analytic and interpretive methods to analyze word clusters and dignity-based themes in a cross-national sample of 1,946 original messages posted in 2020. The study finds that dignity discourse on Twitter advances five major themes: (a) recognize dignity as a fundamental right, (b) uphold the dignity of essential workers, (c) preserve the dignity of at-risk populations, (d) prevent cascading disasters that exacerbate dignity's decline, and (e) attend to death, dignity, and the sanctity of life.

August 2022

School of International Development and Global Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ottawa, 120 University Private, Ottawa, ON, K1N 6N5, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court revoked the constitutional right to seek safe abortion care, overturning Roe v. Wade and allowing states to independently regulate abortion, which disproportionately harms women, especially Black, racialized, and low-income individuals.
  • The authors analyze the historical and systemic impacts of racism and colonialism on racialized women's reproductive health, emphasizing the ongoing biopolitical issues these groups face.
  • They also explore how political decisions on abortion further affect social determinants of health, including education, employment, and equity, while highlighting the continued struggle against oppressive population control practices.

Citrus sour rot caused by Geotrichum citri-aurantii is one of the most important postharvest diseases in citrus fruit, causing huge economic losses. Traditionally, it has been controlled by the postharvest application of guazatine and propiconazole fungicides, but restrictions in their use make it urgent to find an alternative for sour rot management. Natamycin, a common food preservative, and the organosulfuric compounds extracted from Allium species are safe food additives that control different foodborne pathogens.

Amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) accumulation and aggregation have been considered for many years the main cause of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and therefore have been the principal target of investigation as well as of the proposed therapeutic approaches (Grasso [2011] Mass Spectrom Rev. 30: 347-365). However, the amyloid cascade hypothesis, which considers Aβ accumulation the only causative agent of the disease, has proven to be incomplete if not wrong.
