The neural control of breathing is both dynamic and essential, ensuring life-sustaining gas exchange while protecting the respiratory system from harm. Peripheral neurons innervating the respiratory tract exhibit remarkable diversity, continuously relaying sensory feedback to the brain to regulate breathing, trigger protective reflexes such as coughing and sickness behaviors, and even influence emotional states. Understanding this airway-brain axis is especially critical given the increasing global burden of respiratory diseases, as it holds implications for both human health and broader brain-body interactions.

Glial cells are essential regulators of brain homeostasis by orchestrating neuronal function, metabolism and immune responses. However, much less is known about peripheral glial cells, particularly those in the heart. This review explores the development, types and functions of cardiac glial cells, including Schwann cells, satellite glial cells and recently identified cardiac nexus glia, with some reference to their central nervous system counterparts.

This study investigated the advantages of gerbils as a sympathetic nervous system (SNS)-driven model for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and evaluated the therapeutic potential of soy isoflavones (SIFs). Gerbils exhibited unique SNS characteristics, with an adrenal gland-to-kidney weight ratio 2-3 times higher than that of C57BL/6 mice and Wistar rats, demonstrating elevated levels of adrenaline (AE) and noradrenaline (NE) as well as more pronounced anxiety-like behaviors, indicating enhanced SNS activity. Additionally, gerbils possessed liver lipid metabolism and storage capacities similar to humans, along with a simple genetic background, allowing them to more accurately reflect the pathogenesis of NAFLD.

Electronic cigarettes (E-cigs) are commonly presumed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes despite limited understanding of their health risks. This assumption may lead people, especially those in at-risk groups, to switch from traditional cigarettes to e-cigs, or to use e-cigs as their first form of nicotine consumption. Despite that pregnancy increases susceptibility to adverse cardiac events, a considerable fraction of pregnant women use e-cigs during gestation and postpartum.
