Article Abstract

The Qilu Lake is an eutrophic shallow lake located in Yunnan Province, China. An ecological fishery project was initiated in the lake from 2011 to 2021 to introduce filter-feeding fish species that feed on algae, with the aim of improving water quality. In January 2022, when the ecological fishery project expired, all fisheries-related activities (including fish stocking and fishing activities) ceased in the lake. To comprehensively evaluate the initial alterations in fish community structure and diversity resulting from the fishing cessation in the Qilu Lake, the present study conducted field surveys within the one year before the fishing cessation (referred to as BFC) and the one year after the fishing cessation (referred to as AFC). A total of twenty-one fish species were collected, including four native species. Four species were recorded in the lake for the first time, including , , , and . The number of fish species decreased from 21 to 13 following the fishing cessation. The fishes collected in both BFC and AFC are mainly omnivorous-feeding and of bottom-dwelling habits. The mean size of the fishes in the AFC sample shows a significant decrease compared to those in BFC. After the fishing cessation, the Shannon-Wiener diversity index and Margalef richness index of the fish slightly declined. The fish community structure of the Qilu Lake exhibits a high degree of similarity to adjacent lakes in central Yunnan. Our study demonstrates a significant shift in the fish community of the Qilu Lake following the fishing cessation, one which may adversely impact the stability of the lake ecosystem. To enhance fish species diversity in the Qilu Lake, it is recommended that policies be implemented to promote the ecological fishery project and improve habitat restoration for native fish species, while also regulating fish community structure.

Immersion bath in high doses of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) and eugenol is a common euthanasia method for fish, causing rapid cessation of opercular movements. However, in previous studies where cardiac contractions persisted, despite dosages of MS-222 as high as 1000 mg/L, the hypothesis was advanced that apnea could prevent effective euthanasia. The objective of the study was to determine if continuous topical delivery (CTD) over the gills of MS-222 or clove oil (CO) would result in cardiac arrest at 60 minutes, without recovery after placement in fresh water for an additional 60-minute period.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Removing blood stasis and stopping bleeding traditional Chinese medicines (RBSB-TCM) formed a unique class of TCM, characterized by vasodilating, removing stasis and hemostatic effects. Carbonized Typhae Pollen (CTP), derived from Typhae Pollen (TP) through carbonization, has emerged as a particularly valuable therapeutic agent. It has been widely used in clinical practice to treat hemorrhagic disorders caused by blood stasis syndrome (BSS).

Much attention has been paid to the public health crisis that has resulted from the opioid epidemic. Given the high number of opioid users that are of childbearing age, the impact of utero exposure is a serious concern. Unfortunately, there is little knowledge regarding the consequences of opioid exposure during early development.

Aquaculture, which involves the cultivation of aquatic animals and plants, is recognised to be an effective and vital resource-efficient food production system for supplying affordable protein to humans. Hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus x Epinephelus lanceolatus) is a marine carnivorous teleost that has a high economic importance in the marine aquaculture industry particularly in countries in the Asian region. However, the vulnerability of juvenile hybrid grouper to temperature fluctuations stemming from the acceleration of climate change is regarded as one of significant threats to their market supply and a major concern for the aquaculture industry.

Accidental oil spills significantly threaten marine ecosystems and fisheries, impacting biodiversity and ecological health. This study examines the downstream transcriptomic responses of Atlantic halibut larvae exposed to crude oil during organogenesis. Findings show concentration-dependent transcriptional abnormalities.
