Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) comprises a complex neurodevelopmental condition characterized by an impairment in social interaction, involving communication deficits and specific patterns of behaviors, like repetitive behaviors. ASD is clinically diagnosed and usually takes time, typically occurring not before four years of age. Genetic mutations affecting synaptic transmission, such as neuroligin and neurexin, are associated with ASD and contribute to behavioral and cognitive deficits. Recent research highlights the role of astrocytes, the brain's most abundant glial cells, in ASD pathology. Aberrant Ca signaling in astrocytes is linked to behavioral deficits and neuroinflammation. Notably, the cytokine IL-6 overexpression by astrocytes impacts synaptogenesis. Altered neurotransmitter levels, disruptions in the blood-brain barrier, and cytokine dysregulation further contribute to ASD complexity. Understanding these astrocyte-related mechanisms holds promise for identifying ASD subtypes and developing targeted therapies.

Background: Adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience identity confusion, social difficulties, and internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression. Physical activity offers opportunities for peer interaction and teamwork, which may help alleviate negative emotions. This study aims to investigate the pathways through which physical activity influences internalizing problems in adolescents with ASD.

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental disorder marked by impaired interactions and restricted interests, the pathophysiology of which is not fully understood. The current study explored the potential therapeutic effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on the neurophysiological aspects of ASD, specifically focusing on the brain's excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance and behavioral outcomes, providing scientific guidance for ASD intervention.
Methods: Forty-two children with ASD were randomly divided into either an active tDCS or sham tDCS group.
The aim of this study is to analyze egocentric social networks of 31 autistic adults in Québec (Canada). We examined the composition of their proximal personal support network and the role of support shared among autistic peers. A mixed method analysis was used.

Background: Children with congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) have a wide spectrum of possible neurodevelopmental outcomes.
Objectives: To describe neurodevelopmental (ND) Phenotypes of children with cCMV based on medical, developmental, and behavioral outcomes in childhood, and examine whether birth characteristics were associated with ND Phenotype.
Methods: Caregivers of children with cCMV (N = 242, child aged 12 months to <11 years) completed survey instruments reporting on the child's birth characteristics, reasons for cCMV testing, and present medical, developmental, and behavioral status.
