Hyrtl's anastomosis, a transverse inter-arterial connection between the two umbilical arteries near their placental insertion, plays a vital role in maintaining hemodynamic stability in fetal circulation. Despite being a consistent finding in most term placentas, its functional role and clinical significance are underappreciated in perinatal medicine. This review explores the anatomy, physiological function, diagnostic assessment, and clinical implications of Hyrtl's anastomosis, with emphasis on its protective role in ensuring balanced placental perfusion and mitigating hemodynamic stress in compromised pregnancies.

46,XY/46,XY Chimerism: Prenatal Presentation and Postnatal Outcome.

Mol Genet Genomic Med

September 2025

Laboratory Medicine and Genetics, Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Human chimerism is rare, and most prevalent with discordant chromosomal sex. We report a male 46,XY/46,XY chimera, born through a spontaneously conceived pregnancy to a healthy 32-year-old G1P0 Indian, African, and Scottish female and her 34-year-old healthy Chinese partner. The prenatal presentation and postnatal outcomes are described.

Sexually dimorphic associations between Vitamin D metabolites, blood pressure, and placental inflammatory markers in Normoevolutive, preeclamptic and obese pregnancies.

Pregnancy Hypertens

August 2025

Departamento de Biología de la Reproducción Dr. Carlos Gual Castro, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán, Ciudad de México, México. Electronic address:

Objectives: Calcitriol, the active vitamin D (VD) metabolite, abates inflammation and reduces blood pressure (BP). In the human placenta, calcidiol bioconversion into calcitriol is sexually dimorphic, resulting in differential VD-dependent effects. During pregnancy, obesity (OB) and preeclampsia (PE) have been linked to inflammation, hypertension, and impaired VD metabolism.

Background: Inherited thrombophilia is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to placental vascular pathology and adverse pregnancy outcomes. While the clinical implications are well-established, fewer studies have systematically explored the histopathological changes associated with specific genetic mutations in thrombophilic pregnancies.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective observational study included two cohorts of placental samples collected between September 2020 and September 2024 at a tertiary maternity hospital.

Placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) and hepatic mesenchymal hamartomas are rare diseases associated with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome (BWS). We present the case of a 22-year-old diagnosed with PMD at 24 weeks gestation who required emergent delivery secondary to fetal distress and preeclampsia at 30 weeks' gestation. The neonate was diagnosed with a hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma following delivery.
