Trauma or repeated damage to joints can result in focal cartilage defects, significantly elevating the risk of osteoarthritis. Damaged cartilage has an inherently limited self-healing capacity and remains an urgent unmet clinical need. Consequently, there is growing interest in biodegradable hydrogels as potential scaffolds for the repair or reconstruction of cartilage defects. Here, we developed a biodegradable and macroporous hybrid double-network (DN) cryogel by combining two independently cross-linked networks of multiarm polyethylene glycol (PEG) acrylate and alginate.Hybrid DN cryogels are formed using highly biocompatible click reactions for the PEG network and ionic bonding for the alginate network. By judicious selection of various structurally similar cross-linkers to form the PEG network, we can generate hybrid DN cryogels with customizable degradation kinetics. The resulting PEG-alginate hybrid DN cryogels have an interconnected macroporous structure, high mechanical strength, and rapid swelling kinetics. The interconnected macropores in the cryogels support efficient mesenchymal stem cell infiltration at a high density. Finally, we demonstrate that PEG-alginate hybrid DN cryogels allow sustained release of chondrogenic growth factors and support chondrogenic differentiation of mouse mesenchymal stem cells. This study provides a novel method to generate macroporous hybrid DN cryogels with customizable degradation rates and a potential scaffold for cartilage tissue engineering.

Innovative functional materials integrating host-guest complexes in cryogels offer promising applications in topical drug delivery, enhancing drug solubility and stability. In this study, we designed and developed a cryogel-based patch for acne treatment by polymerizing an acrylate-functionalized γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and trimethoprim (TMP) inclusion complex with [2-(acryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (AETMA) at low temperatures. A multistep workflow was applied to synthesize the inclusion complex via mortar-assisted kneading, followed by cryogel formulation through radical cryopolymerization.

Recognizing the complexity of the bone regeneration cascade and understanding the adverse effects of using growth factors, it is crucial to develop a growth factor-free scaffold with multiple functions to modulate various aspects of the regenerative process. This study explores a novel macroporous multifunctional bone graft for bone regeneration, aiming to overcome complications associated with current treatment modalities. The study reveals enhanced bone regeneration and vascularization by integrating silica hybrid and nano-whitlockite (nWH) into cryogel-based composite scaffolds.

The modern era demands multifunctional materials to support advanced technologies and tackle complex environmental issues caused by these innovations. Consequently, material hybridization has garnered significant attention as a strategy to design materials with prescribed multifunctional properties. Drawing inspiration from nature, a multi-scale material design approach is proposed to produce 3D-shaped hybrid materials by combining chaotic flows with direct ink writing (ChDIW).

Exploiting conductive biobased polymer nanocomposites for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is a rapidly evolving research area. In this study, we systematically fine-tune the nano- and microstructural features of bacterial cellulose (BC) modified with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) for EMI shielding applications. First, to investigate the effect of nanostructure, PEDOT is incorporated into the BC matrix using two methods: chemical vapor polymerization (CVP) and polymerization.

Controllable macromolecular architecture formation via polysaccharide integrated ternary copolymerization was explored in the design of amino-functionalized n-alkyl methacrylate ester-based biohybrids. Ternary poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate-co-hydroxypropyl methacrylate)/sodium-alginate, PDGH/ALG, hybrids were designed using anionic polysaccharide through in-situ radical polymerization. An insight into the effect of ALG on physicochemical structure of ternary hybrids, particularly the interactions between polymeric chains, was created.
