Article Abstract

CORAL (Catamaran fOr UndeRwAter expLoration) is a compact, unmanned catamaran-type vehicle designed and developed to assist the scientific community in exploring marine areas such as inshore regions that are not easily accessible by traditional vessels. This vehicle can operate in different modalities: completely autonomous, semi-autonomous, or remotely assisted by the operator, thus accommodating various investigative scenarios. CORAL is characterized by compact dimensions, a very low draft and a total electric propulsion system. The vehicle is equipped with a single echo-sounder, a 450 kHz Side Scan Sonar, an Inertial Navigation System assisted by a GPS receiver and a pair of high-definition cameras for recording both above and below the water surface. Here, we present results from two investigations: the first conducted in the tourist harbour in Pozzuoli Gulf and the second in the Riomaggiore-Manarola marine area within the Cinque Terre territory (Italy). Both surveys yielded promising results regarding the potentiality of CORAL to collect fine-scale submarine elements such as anthropic objects, sedimentary features, and seagrass meadow spots. These capabilities characterize the CORAL system as a highly efficient investigation tool for depicting shallow bedforms, reconstructing coastal dynamics and erosion processes and monitoring the evolution of biological habitats.

With advances in underwater exploration and intelligent ocean technologies, wheeled underwater mobile robots are increasingly used for seabed surveying, engineering, and environmental monitoring. However, complex terrains centered on seabed soft slopes-characterized by wheel slippage due to soil deformability and force imbalance arising from slope variations-pose challenges to the accuracy and robustness of trajectory tracking control systems. Model predictive control (MPC), known for predictive optimization and constraint handling, is commonly used in such tasks.

Underwater image enhancement poses unique challenges due to poor visibility, color distortion, and haze caused by light absorption and scattering in water. In this paper, we propose an ensemble model, Ensemble Pyramid-based Convolutional Neural Network and Deep Channel Prior Dehazing Network (EPCNN-DCPDN), which combines Pyramid-based Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and the Deep Channel Prior Dehazing Network (DCPDN) to address these challenges. The model operates in two ways: sequentially, by first applying DCPDN for haze removal followed by Pyramid-based CNNs for multi-scale feature refinement, or in parallel, with outputs from both models fused using a weighted average or learned fusion mechanism.

Octopus-Inspired Self-Adaptive Hydrogel Gripper Capable of Manipulating Ultra-Soft Objects.

Nanomicro Lett

Octopuses, due to their flexible arms, marvelous adaptability, and powerful suckers, are able to effortlessly grasp and disengage various objects in the marine surrounding without causing devastation. However, manipulating delicate objects such as soft and fragile foods underwater require gentle contact and stable adhesion, which poses a serious challenge to now available soft grippers. Inspired by the sucker infundibulum structure and flexible tentacles of octopus, herein we developed a hydraulically actuated hydrogel soft gripper with adaptive maneuverability by coupling multiple hydrogen bond-mediated supramolecular hydrogels and vat polymerization three-dimensional printing, in which hydrogel bionic sucker is composed of a tunable curvature membrane, a negative pressure cavity, and a pneumatic chamber.

Subterranean exploration in submerged granular media (GM) presents significant challenges for robotic systems due to high drag forces and the complex physics of GM. This paper introduces a robotic system that combines water-jet-based fluidization for self-burrowing in submerged environments and an untethered, volume-change mechanism for burrowing out. The water-based fluidization approach significantly reduces drag on the robot, allowing it to burrow into GM with minimal force.

Soundscapes are vital components of marine ecosystems, yet increasing anthropogenic noise is altering natural acoustic environments. This study explores the relationship between soundscape characteristics and hotspots of abundance for the Critically Endangered grey nurse shark (Carcharias taurus). Using SoundTrap hydrophones (ST600 and ST300), acoustic data was recorded at three aggregation and three non-aggregation sites off Port Stephens, Southeast Australia, between May and July 2023 to accumulate a total of over 1000 h of sound for the entire study.
