Purpose: To evaluate visual outcomes after bacterial keratitis (BK) and identify predictive factors for poor prognosis at a tertiary referral center in Southern California.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional retrospective review of patients' medical records with culture-positive BK at University of California Los Angeles from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2019. Main outcome measure was change in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at 12 weeks posttreatment.

Microtubule-based nucleation results in a large sensitivity to cell geometry of the plant cortical array.

PLoS Comput Biol

Mathematical and Statistical Methods (Biometris), Wageningen University, Wageningen, The Netherlands.

Many plant cell functions, including cell morphogenesis and anisotropic growth, rely on the self-organisation of cortical microtubules into aligned arrays with the correct orientation. An important ongoing debate is how cell geometry, wall mechanical stresses, and other internal and external cues are integrated to determine the orientation of the cortical array. Here, we demonstrate that microtubule-based nucleation can markedly shift the balance between these often competing directional cues.

In resource-limited settings in Africa, which harbour the greatest burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) globally, poor care outcomes are driven in part, by a lack of trained healthcare providers (HCP) and an absence of context-specific treatment guidelines appropriate to the level of healthcare facility. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of a structured training program on HCP's knowledge of SCD in Ghana. This was prospective cross-sectional study involving HCPs from 46 health facilities from 4 out of 16 regions in Ghana.

Outcomes were to compare the accuracy of 2 large-language models-GPT-4o and o3-Mini-against medical-student performance on otolaryngology-focused, USMLE-style multiple-choice questions. With permission from AMBOSS, we extracted 146 Step 2 CK questions tagged "Otolaryngology" and stratified them by AMBOSS difficulty (levels 1-5). Each item was presented verbatim to GPT-4o and o3-Mini through their official APIs; outputs were scored correct/incorrect.
