Article Abstract

The eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth, , are frequently utilized as alternative diets and have demonstrated promising outcomes when consumed by various insects. Nonetheless, the specific reasons for their effectiveness remain unclear. In our study, we assessed the developmental performance of the ladybird when fed eggs, alongside 12 factitious prey or artificial diets. Our findings revealed that ladybirds fed eggs displayed a performance comparable to those fed the natural prey . Transcriptome profiling of larvae raised on eggs and revealed that genes upregulated in the former group were enriched in metabolic pathways associated with carbohydrates, lipids, and other essential nutrients. This suggests that eggs may have a higher nutrient content compared to natural prey. Furthermore, a notable downregulation in the expression of immune effector genes, such as and , was observed, which might be attributed to the lower microbial content in eggs compared to . We suggest that the difference between eggs and as food sources for lies in their nutrient and microbial contents. These findings provide valuable insights for the advancement of innovative artificial breeding systems for natural enemies.

BackgroundDespite a growing interest in household-level agriculture-nutrition linkage, evidence remains thin in countries like Tajikistan, one of the poorest former socialist countries where food crop production decisions by individual farm households had been significantly regulated by the government until recently.ObjectivesWe narrow this knowledge gap by examining the linkages between households' food production practice as well as their productivity performances and dietary diversity scores (DDS) of both the household and individual women in Tajikistan.MethodsWe use a panel sample of households and individual women of reproductive ages in the Khatlon province of Tajikistan, the poorest province and a major agricultural region of the country.

Purpose: A network analysis model was used to investigate the network structure linking food intake and mental health among middle school students in Shandong Province from a specific symptom perspective.

Methods: A total of 6179 middle school students aged 11-18 years in Shandong Province were included in the study. The modified Chinese Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ) and Symptom Check List 90 (SCL-90) were used to estimate the status of food intake and mental health, respectively.

College of Animal Science and Technology, College of Veterinary Medicine, Jilin Agricultural University, Changchun, Jilin, China.

Background: Maternal dietary intervention utilizing complex additives rich in β-carotene has demonstrated the capacity to enhance embryonic intestinal development and influence microbial composition in offspring. Nevertheless, the extended impact of maternal β-carotene inclusion on the intestinal health of post-hatching chicks is still not fully elucidated.

Objective: This research aimed to evaluate the impacts of maternal β-carotene supplementation on the intestinal development and microbial communities in chicks after hatching.

Measures of organismal fitness must take into account reproductive output and survivorship across life-history stages. In , a laboratory model system, these traits are often quantified with egg-laying assays and egg-to-adult viability. While several protocols for automated egg counting exist, these methods typically preclude directly analyzing phenotypic distributions in resulting adults.

Despite being recognized as a low-cost food, rich in proteins and other nutrients, for years eggs have been the subject of controversy regarding a possible negative impact on human health linked to their frequent consumption and their cholesterol content. This narrative review describes the composition of eggs, the properties of individual nutrients, and the impact of their deficiency or excess on human health, and the development of several pathologies. The chemical-physical properties of the proteins and lipids contained in eggs and the environmental impact linked to their production are also considered.
