Article Abstract

This study evaluates the potential of several biomasses differing in nature and composition for their valorization by pyrolysis and in line oxidative steam reforming. The first task involved the fast pyrolysis of the biomasses in a conical spouted bed reactor (CSBR) at 500 °C, in which product yields were analyzed in detail. Then, the oxidative steam reforming (OSR) of pyrolysis volatiles (gases and bio-oil) was approached in a fluidized bed reactor (FBR). The reforming experiments were performed at 600 °C, with a steam/biomass (S/B) ratio of 3 and catalyst (Ni/AlO) space times of 7.5 and 20 g min g . Concerning equivalence ratio (ER), a value of 0.12 was selected to ensure autothermal operation. Remarkable differences were observed in H production depending on the type of biomass. Thus, pine wood led to a H production of 9.3 wt %. The lower productions obtained with rice husk (7.7 wt %) and orange peel (5.5 wt %) are associated with their higher ash and fixed carbon content, respectively, which limit the efficiency of biomass conversion to bio-oil. However, in the case of the microalgae, the poor performance observed is because of the lower conversion in the reforming step toward gases due to the composition of its pyrolysis volatile stream.

Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Molecular Design and Precise Breeding, School of Animal Science and Technology, Foshan University, Foshan, China.

Double-Layer Steamed Milk Custard (DLSMC) is a famous traditional Chinese dessert. This study aimed to analyze the flavor and the changes in metabolites during different stages of DLSMC preparation, including raw buffalo milk, thermo-processing, first and second-layer milk skin formation. Electronic nose and electronic tongue were employed to preliminarily assess the overall flavor characteristics between these stages.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of transurethral water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT) using the Rezūm system for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in the real world.

Methods: A total of 181 patients with BPH were recruited from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from August 2022 to December 2023, of whom 173 patients were treated with WVTT using the Rezūm system, while 8 patients were treated with WVTT combined with TURP. They were followed up at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively to assess changes in the IPSS, QoL, Qmax, IIEF-5, and the occurrence of any complications.

This study developed pectin nanocellulose (PNC) composite films using pectin extracted from watermelon rind and nanocellulose (NC) derived from pineapple peel. Films were prepared by incorporating varying NC concentrations (2 %, 5 %, 7 %, and 10 %) into the pectin matrix and characterized for optical, barrier, mechanical, thermal, and biodegradation properties, as well as their effectiveness in extending the shelf life of fresh-cut cauliflower. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed NC integration into the pectin matrix.

To address post-harvest issues of litchi, including browning, water loss, and nutrient degradation, a moisture microenvironment-regulating electro spun membrane was prepared by incorporating hydrophobic carnauba wax (CW)@nano silica (SiO) composite powder into a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) matrix via electro spinning. The dynamic water penetration equilibrium was evaluated by monitoring the water vapor absorption of the electrospun membrane within 12 h, while the effects of CW@SiO on the micro-structure, mechanical properties, hydrophobicity, and thermal stability were investigated. Results showed that the tensile strength of the PET-2.

Solar steam generation, a sustainable and cost-effective water purification technique, has emerged as a promising solution to the global freshwater shortage. Plasmonic photothermal nanomaterials (NMs) have recently garnered enormous attention owing to their strong light-matter interactions and high photothermal conversion efficiency. This review begins by outlining the fundamentals of the plasmonic effect.
