Article Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with increased rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality and is linked to abnormal electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters. We aimed to explore the relationships and interactions among MetS and its components, abnormal P-wave axis (aPWA), and mortality rates.

Methods: We analyzed data from 7526 adult participants with sinus rhythm recruited from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. MetS was classified based on the NCEP ATP III-2005 definition. aPWA included all P-wave axis outside 0-75°. The National Death Index was utilized to identify survival status. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) categorized by aPWA, MetS, and their components were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models to investigate all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities.

Results: Within a median follow-up period of 20.76 years, 4686 deaths were recorded, of which 1414 were attributable to cardiovascular disease. Participants with both MetS and aPWA had higher all-cause (HR: 1.45, 95% CI: 1.29-1.64, interaction P = 0.043) and cardiovascular (HR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.02-1.79, interaction P-value = 0.058) mortality rates than participants without MetS and with a normal P-wave axis. Participants with the greatest number of MetS components and aPWA had a higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.13-2.55, P = 0.011).

Conclusions: Individuals with both aPWA and MetS have a higher risk of mortality, and those with a greater number of MetS components and aPWA have a higher risk of all-cause mortality. These findings highlight the significance of integrating ECG characteristics with metabolic health status in clinical assessment.

Background: Developing integrative screening strategies to improve early identification of alcohol use disorder (AUD) is critical. This study examines cardiovascular parameters and alcohol-related phenotypes associated with two groups of alcohol drinkers: high-risk and low-risk.

Methods: Data from 520 high-risk and 586 low-risk non-smoking alcohol drinkers were analyzed.

Background And Aims: Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, making early detection and risk assessment critical. Various clinical tools, including the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) risk score, have been developed to predict cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to evaluate the association of various Electrocardiogram (ECG) findings with 10-year ASCVD risk scores in asymptomatic individuals without prior cardiovascular events, using data from the Shiraz Heart Study (SHS).

Objectives: Benzene exposure is associated with multiple adverse health effects on the human's biological systems including its cardiac, pulmonary, respiratory, renal, liver, and other organs' function. The purpose of this study is to assess the adverse health effects of benzene exposure on the cardiac functions in subjects affected by a flaring incident at the British Petroleum (BP) refinery in Texas City, Texas, USA.

Material And Methods: A total of 1790 evaluable subjects who were exposed to benzene were included in the study.

Should Ivabradine be First-Line Therapy for Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia?

Pacing Clin Electrophysiol

Department of Cardiology, Northwell, New Hyde Park, New York, USA.

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) is a rare syndrome characterized by a persistent daytime resting heart rate (HR) >100 beats per minute, a mean 24-h HR of >90 beats per minute, with P wave morphology and axis characteristics similar to that of sinus rhythm. IST is associated with symptomatic palpitation described as an abrupt transient acceleration of HR at rest or minimal activity and is often associated with multiple psychosomatic symptoms. Self-sustained contractile activity, i.

F-wave sway in paroxysmal and chronic atrial fibrillation.

J Electrocardiol

Vectorcardiography (VCG) can evaluate the vector loops of electrocardiographic waves, being a time-spatial representation of the heart vector into the three orthonormal leads. During atrial fibrillation (AF), F waves reflect the disorganized depolarization of the atria, replacing the organized P wave. Usually, paroxysmal AF (PAF) spontaneously terminates, differently from chronic AF (CAF), possibly due to the still-preserved main direction of the P-wave vector loop.
