Background: Parasite antigens and plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels from luminal origin in visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patients are correlated with cellular activation and low CD4+T cell counts.
Objectives: Our aim was to verify whether Leishmania infantum infection damages the intestinal barrier and whether combination antimonial/antibiotic contributes to the reduction of LPS levels and immune activation.
Methods: Golden hamsters were grouped in: G1-uninfected; G2-infected with L.

Vitamin B12 is a vital water-soluble vitamin containing a central cobalt atom within its corrin ring structure. It exists in several derivatives, among which methylcobalamin (MeCbl) and adenosylcobalamin (AdCbl) are the biologically active forms that serve as cofactors in essential enzymatic reactions. Although the neurological and hematological consequences of vitamin B12 deficiency have been extensively studied, its role in immune regulation remains less well understood.

Background: The relationship between carbon dioxide pressures (PCO) and contents (CCO) is linked to the Haldane effect. Nevertheless, under shock conditions, hydrogen ion accumulation might strongly influence the discrepancies between PCO and CCO. This study aims to evaluate the impact of hydrogen ion accumulation and hemoglobin oxygen saturation (Haldane effect) on PCO:CCO relationships during induction and resuscitation of endotoxemic shock.

Background: After spinal cord injury (SCI), pro-inflammatory microglia accumulate and impede axonal regeneration. We explored whether secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (Sparc) restrains microglial inflammation and fosters neurite outgrowth.
Methods: Mouse microglial BV2 cells were polarized to a pro-inflammatory phenotype with lipopolysaccharides (LPSs).

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune demyelinating disease, and its effective treatment is a great challenge. As a typical animal model for studying multiple sclerosis, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is characterized by inflammation, demyelination, gliosis and axonal loss. Thus, simultaneous regulation of neuroinflammation and remyelination may be a useful strategy against EAE.
