Article Abstract

Accurate estimation of hip joint center (HJC) position is crucial during gait analysis. HJC is obtained with predictive or functional methods. But in the functional method, there is no consensus on where to place the skin markers and which combination to use. The objective of this study was to analyze how different combinations of skin markers affect the estimation of HJC position relative to predictive methods. Forty-one healthy volunteers were included in this study; thirteen markers were placed on the pelvis and hip of each subject's lower limbs. Various marker combinations were used to determine the HJC position based on ten calibration movement trials, captured by a motion capture system. The estimated HJC position for each combination was evaluated by focusing on the range and standard deviation of the mean norm values of HJC and the mean X, Y, Z coordinates of HJC for each limb. The combinations that produced the best estimates incorporated the markers on the pelvis and on proximal and easily identifiable muscles, with results close to predictive methods. The combination that excluded the markers on the pelvis was not robust in estimating the HJC position.

Surfaces contaminated with pathogens pose a significant risk of disease transmission and infection. Alcohol-based disinfectants are widely utilized to decontaminate high-touch areas across various settings. However, their limited antimicrobial activity and the emergence of alcohol-tolerant strains necessitate the development of highly efficient disinfectant formulations.

Five-Time Sit-To-Stand Lower Limb Muscle Power in Older Women: An Explorative, Descriptive and Comparative Analysis.

Hélio José Coelho-Júnior and Emanuele Marzetti, Department of Geriatrics, Orthopedics and Rheumatology, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 00168 Rome, Italy, (H.J.C.-J.), (E.M.); +39 (06) 3015-4859.

Background: Muscle power assessment entails the use of complex equipment which impacts its clinical applicability. Recently, equations to estimate lower-limb muscle power measures based on 5-repetition sit-to-stand (5STS) performance and anthropometric parameters were validated. However, their ability to discriminate physical performance status in older adults is still unknown.

The role of bystander CPR in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: what the evidence tells us.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global public health problem. Lay bystanders witness almost half of OHCA, so early recognition is critical to allow immediate initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by the bystander. The present investigation aims to analyze the most recent scientific evidence of the effect of bystander CPR on survival after an OHCA.

Objective: The echocardiographic assessment of the systemic right ventricle (sRV) performance during stress testing is limited and evaluation is not routinely performed. The aim of the study is to investigate sRV myocardial performance at rest and with exercise in patients with complete transposition of the great arteries (dTGA) who have undergone atrial switch operation.

Methods: In a single-center cross-sectional study, 41 patients with dTGA following the atrial switch operation and gender-matched 20 healthy volunteers underwent exercise echocardiography on a bicycle ergometer in the semi-supine position to assess sRV systolic function indices: tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), right ventricular area change (FAC), global longitudinal strain (GLS) and systemic velocity time integral (VTI).

Devising an approach to deterministically position organisms can impact various fields such as bioimaging, cybernetics, cryopreservation, and organism-integrated devices. This requires continuously assessing the locations of randomly distributed organisms to collect and transfer them to target spaces without harm. Here, an aspiration-assisted adaptive printing system is developed that tracks, harvests, and relocates living and moving organisms on target spaces via a pick-and-place mechanism that continuously adapts to updated visual and spatial information about the organisms and target spaces.
