Article Abstract

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) efforts are increasingly recognized as critical for the success of academic institutions. These efforts are facilitated mainly through the formation of dedicated DEIA committees. DEIA committees enhance professional development and create a more inclusive environment, which benefits all members of the institution. Although leadership and faculty membership have recognized the importance and necessity of DEIA, the roles of DEIA committees may be more ambiguous. Although leadership and faculty may seek to support DEIA at their institutions, they may not always fully understand the necessity of these committees or how to successfully create a committee, foster and promote its success, and sustain its impact. Thus, here, we offer a background rationale and guide for strategically setting up DEIA committees for success and impact within an academic institution with applicability to scientific societies.

Am J Speech Lang Pathol

August 2025

Department of Physical Therapy, Byrdine F. Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University, Atlanta.

Purpose: This article situates the revised Communication Bill of Rights (National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities, 2024) within a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) framework. With an emphasis that diversity should be inclusive of disability, this work postulates the interconnectedness of DEIA and the communication rights of individuals with severe disabilities. The full set of communication rights is presented, followed by a deeper discussion of four rights that address dignity and respect in interactions, meaningful conversations that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, services across the lifespan, and access to functioning augmentative and alternative communication and other assistive technology to support communication.

HPV genotyping agreement between paired cervical cytological sample and biopsy across lesion severity and vaccination.

Virol J

June 2025

Department of Cancer Epidemiology, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, 100021, China.

Background: Cytological samples are genotyped to inform clinical management of HPV-infected women due to their accessibility. Conversely, HPV genotypes identified in biopsies are deemed directly associated with cervical lesions. Thus, investigating genotyping agreement between these two sample types and potential influence of lesion severity and vaccination status on their degree of concordance is essential for understanding their diagnostic reliability.

Background And Objectives: Medical schools and family medicine organizations have been working on advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism (DEIA). Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) faculty members are disproportionately expected to lead DEIA initiatives, negatively affecting academic promotion and well-being. Our study aimed to describe the existing DEIA initiatives, strategies, and barriers to implementing support for DEIA work, as well as the implications of addressing the minority tax in US and Canadian family medicine departments.
