Article Abstract

Resistance traits of plants can be activated both at the damaged site and undamaged parts. Systemic resistance induced by local exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) application alleviated negative effect of low water availability on growth performance of clonal plant. However, timing of systemic resistance was poorly understood. Timing of systemic resistance refers to its activation and decay time within clonal network. Clonal fragment of with four successive ramets (including first-oldest, second-older, third-old and fourth-young ramets) subjected to low water availability (20% soil moisture content) was used to explore effects of local exogenous ABA application on the timing of resistance activation and decay. Systemic resistance activated by local exogenous ABA application after 4 days remained at least 28 days. Compared with control, biomass accumulation of whole clonal fragment, root biomass and ratio of belowground to aboveground biomass significantly increased by local exogenous ABA application after 28 days. It is suggested that rapid activation and delay of resistance response induced by local exogenous ABA application within clonal network may improve fitness of clonal plant subjected to abiotic stress.

In this article, a biophysically realistic model of a soft octopus arm with internal musculature is presented. The modeling is motivated by experimental observations of sensorimotor control where an arm localizes and reaches a target. Major contributions of this article are: (i) development of models to capture the mechanical properties of arm musculature, the electrical properties of the arm peripheral nervous system (PNS), and the coupling of PNS with muscular contractions; (ii) modeling the arm sensory system, including chemosensing and proprioception; and (iii) algorithms for sensorimotor control, which include a novel feedback neural motor control law for mimicking target-oriented arm reaching motions, and a novel consensus algorithm for solving sensing problems such as locating a food source from local chemical sensory information (exogenous) and arm deformation information (endogenous).

Timely blood resupply is a clinical strategy to treat myocardial infarction, which unavoidably causes myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. With disturbed electrical conduction and oxidative stress in infarcted myocardium, injured heart experiences a negative ventricle remodeling process, and finally leads to heart failure. Nitric oxide (NO) is a short-lived signaling molecule regulating cardiovascular homeostasis, while vasodilation of systemic vasculature is accompanied by its exogenous supplementation.

The protogynous orange-spotted grouper (), a sequentially hermaphroditic teleost, relies on dynamic regulation of germ cell development and sex reversal mechanisms to achieve reproductive plasticity. The gene family, pivotal for germ cell development and transposon silencing across metazoans, remains poorly characterized in hermaphroditic species. Here, we investigate , a homologue in the orange-spotted grouper (.

OsWRKY113 functions as a negative regulator of rice immunity against Fusarium fujikuroi by attenuating jasmonic acid-mediated immune responses, unveiling its previously uncharacterized role within the OsWRKY transcription factor family. The fungal pathogen Fusarium fujikuroi is a major causal agent of bakanae disease in rice (Oryza sativa), a globally important staple crop. WRKY transcription factors are key regulators in the interaction between rice and this pathogen.
