Article Abstract

Barley genomic resources are increasing rapidly, with the publication of a barley pangenome as one of the latest developments. Two-row spring barley cultivars are intensely studied as they are the source of high-quality grain for malting and distilling. Here we provide data from a European two-row spring barley population containing 209 different genotypes registered for the UK market between 1830 to 2014. The dataset encompasses RNA-sequencing data from six different tissues across a range of barley developmental stages, phenotypic datasets from two consecutive years of field-grown trials in the United Kingdom, Germany and the USA; and whole genome shotgun sequencing from all cultivars, which was used to complement the RNA-sequencing data for variant calling. The outcomes are a filtered SNP marker file, a phenotypic database and a large gene expression dataset providing a comprehensive resource which allows for downstream analyses like genome wide association studies or expression associations.

Introduction: Cow colostrum synthesis takes place during the last month of pregnancy. Its composition is influenced by individual and environmental factors, such as cow parity, feeding, season and environmental conditions. Therefore, colostrum metabolomic profiling may provide information about the physiological status of cows around calving.

CONSTANS, CONSTANS-LIKE, TIMING OF CAB EXPRESSION1 (CCT) motif genes play a key role in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) development and flowering, yet their genetic diversity remains underexplored. Leveraging a barley pangenome (76 genotypes) and pan-transcriptome (subset of 20 genotypes), we examined CCT gene variation and evolutionary dynamics.

Background: Here, we describe AgMicrobiomeBase as an output of the UK Crop Microbiome Cryobank (UKCMCB) project, including details of the underlying meta-barcode sequence-based methods and three microbiome analysis case studies. The UKCMCB links genomic datasets and associated soil metadata with a cryobank collection of samples, for six economically significant crops: fava bean (Vicia faba), oil seed rape (Brassica napus), spring barley (Hordeum vulgare), spring oats (Avena sativa), spring wheat (Triticum aestivum) and sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). The crops were grown in nine agricultural soils from the UK, representing three major soil texture classes.

Influence of drought and leaf age on photosynthetic utilization of fluctuating light in barley.

Diffused light and sunflecks within the crop canopy cause rapid changes in light intensity, which decrease photosynthetic productivity. Under water deficit conditions, the negative effect of light variability on photosynthetic performance can be further aggravated. The differentiation in the response of the youngest fully developed and older leaves of barley varieties to simulated drought was evaluated under fluctuating light.
