Underutilised crops are important for diversifying food systems. The genomics of these crops should not be done in isolation but should align with their breeding and capacity building strategies while leveraging advances made in major crops.

Agricultural residues, especially horse manure, represent an underutilised resource for biogas production. This study investigated mechanical ball mill pretreatment effects on substrate mixtures containing high proportion of horse manure and other agricultural residues in full-scale continuous stirred tank reactors. Experiments compared pretreated and untreated substrate mixtures under continuous and shock feeding scenarios at different organic loading rates.

Genomics-informed breeding of locally adapted, nutritious, albeit underutilised African crops can help mitigate food and nutrition insecurity challenges in Africa, particularly against the backdrop of climate change. However, utilisation of modern genome-assisted crop improvement tools including genomic selection and genome editing for many African indigenous crops is hampered by the scarcity of genomic resources. Here we report on the assembly of the genome of African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa), a tuberous legume crop that is indigenous to Africa.
