Article Abstract

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a cancer with one of the highest mortality rates in the world. Several studies have been conductedusing preclinical experiments in mice to find new therapeutic strategies. Experimental ultrasound, in expert hands, is a safe, multifaceted, and relatively not-expensive device that helps researchers in several ways. In this systematic review, we propose a summary of the applications of ultrasonography in a preclinical mouse model of PDAC. Eighty-eight studies met our inclusion criteria. The included studies could be divided into seven main topics: ultrasound in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and progression (n: 21); dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US) (n: 5); microbubble ultra-sound-mediated drug delivery; focused ultrasound (n: 23); sonodynamic therapy (SDT) (n: 7); harmonic motion elastography (HME) and shear wave elastography (SWE) (n: 6); ultrasound-guided procedures (n: 9). In six cases, the articles fit into two or more sections. In conclusion, ultrasound can be a really useful, eclectic, and ductile tool in different diagnostic areas, not only regarding diagnosis but also in therapy, pharmacological and interventional treatment, and follow-up. All these multiple possibilities of use certainly represent a good starting point for the effective and wide use of murine ultrasonography in the study and comprehensive evaluation of pancreatic cancer.

Functional synapses between neurons and small cell lung cancer.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive type of lung cancer, characterized by rapid proliferation, early metastatic spread, frequent early relapse and a high mortality rate. Recent evidence has suggested that innervation has an important role in the development and progression of several types of cancer. Cancer-to-neuron synapses have been reported in gliomas, but whether peripheral tumours can form such structures is unknown.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) hypovolemia is characterized by symptoms, such as orthostatic headaches, due to a deficit of CSF caused by intermittent CSF leakage. Traditionally, the diagnosis of CSF hypovolemia relied on measuring CSF pressure, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography myelography, though several cases showed no positive findings with these methods. We addressed this diagnostic challenge by developing the CSF refill test and announced its effectiveness in January 2024.

Hand gesture recognition(HGR) is a key technology in human-computer interaction and human communication. This paper presents a lightweight, parameter-free attention convolutional neural network (LPA-CNN) approach leveraging Gramian Angular Field(GAF)transformation of A-mode ultrasound signals for HGR. First, this paper maps 1-dimensional (1D) A-mode ultrasound signals, collected from the forearm muscles of 10 healthy participants, into 2-dimensional (2D) images.

Purpose: To build computed tomography (CT)-based radiomics models, with independent external validation, to predict recurrence and disease-specific mortality in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) who underwent liver resection.

Methods: 113 patients were included in this retrospective study: the internal training cohort comprised 66 patients, while the external validation cohort comprised 47. All patients underwent a CT study before surgery.

This study aimed to investigate the acute changes in the passive stiffness of biarticular hamstring muscles after passive stretching and eccentric-only resistance exercise performed at different loads. Thirteen healthy young male participants performed four exercise sessions (on separate days) that comprised passive knee extension (0% of maximal eccentric torque) and eccentric-only knee flexion at different loads (25%, 50% and 75%). Maximal knee joint range of motion, passive torque, shear moduli of the biarticular hamstring muscles, and maximal isometric torque were measured before, 5 min, and 30 min after completing each session.
