Article Abstract

Iron-catalyzed C-H activation has recently emerged as an increasingly powerful synthetic method for the step- and atom- economical direct C-H functionalizations of otherwise inert C-H bonds. Iron's low-cost and toxicity along with its catalytic versatility have encouraged the scientific community to elect this metal for the development of new C-H activation methodologies. Within this review, we aim to present a collection of the most recent examples of iron-catalyzed C-H functionalizations with a particular emphasis on modern synthetic strategies and mechanistic aspects.

Air pollution and long COVID: association with pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities 3-15 months post-COVID.

While studies have examined associations between air pollution and subjective long COVID outcomes such as fatigue and symptoms, no studies have focused on objective lung health measures. This study aimed to assess the impact of air pollution, examined through different exposure methods (exposures assigned via geospatial model, versus residential and personal measurements) on pulmonary function and radiological abnormalities in long COVID patients. We recruited 95 patients who attended a hospital outpatient clinic 3-6 months post-infection, during which pulmonary function was assessed via spirometry (FEV1,FVC,FEV1/FVC ratio) and diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO), along with a chest CT.

Allenes have gained prominence in transition metal-catalyzed C-H activation reactions due to their versatile reactivity. While C(sp)-H functionalization with allenes has been well explored, the functionalization of more challenging C(sp)-H bonds with allenes remains largely underexplored. Herein, we present a scalable Rh(III)-catalyzed strategy for the site-selective C(sp)-H dienylation of biologically relevant 8-methylquinolines employing allenyl carbinol acetates for accessing structurally diverse 1,3-dienes.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a rare, neurodegenerative disorder for which only symptomatic treatments are available. The PROOF-HD study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of pridopidine, a selective Sigma-1 receptor agonist, in HD. The primary and key secondary endpoints, change in total functional capacity (TFC) and composite Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (cUHDRS) score at week 65, were not met in the overall population.

Nanobioreactor detection of space-associated hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell aging.

Human hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) fitness declines following exposure to stressors that reduce survival, dormancy, telomere maintenance, and self-renewal, thereby accelerating aging. While previous National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research revealed immune dysfunction in low-earth orbit (LEO), the impact of spaceflight on human HSPC aging had not been studied. To study HSPC aging, our NASA-supported Integrated Space Stem Cell Orbital Research (ISSCOR) team developed bone marrow niche nanobioreactors with lentiviral bicistronic fluorescent, ubiquitination-based cell-cycle indicator (FUCCI2BL) reporter for real-time HSPC tracking in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven CubeLabs.

Palladium-Catalyzed Dearomative Heck/C-H Activation/[4 + 2] Decarboxylative Cyclization of C2-Tethered Indoles.

J Org Chem

September 2025

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology and Traditional Chinese Medicine Research (Ministry of Education), and Key Laboratory of the Assembly and Application of Organic Functional Molecules of Hunan Province, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan Normal University, Changsha, Hunan 410081,

We herein report a palladium-catalyzed dearomative Heck/C(sp)-H activation/[4 + 2] decarboxylative cyclization of C2-tethered indoles. In this transformation, the alkylpalladium(II) species generated by indole dearomatization undergoes C-H activation to form ,-palladacycles, which are subsequently trapped by -bromobenzoic acids or cyclic β-bromoacrylic acids, enabling regio- and diastereoselective construction of hexacyclic and octocyclic fused indolines with a broad substrate scope.
