Article Abstract

Background: Monitoring of adverse events induced by cosmetics performed by health authorities, known as cosmetovigilance, has been relied on the collection of case notifications.

Objectives: We aimed to show how a contact dermatitis registry can contribute to the cosmetovigilance of emerging allergens. We used the example of phenylethyl resorcinol, an infrequent allergen with only 6 previous cases reported in Europe and Japan since 2013.

Methods: A systematic search in the Spanish Registry of Contact Dermatitis and Cutaneous Allergy (REIDAC) database was performed to identify patients with positive patch test to phenylethyl resorcinol or cosmetics that contains it between June 2018 and January 2023. We collected the main clinical features of these patients and compared them with those of patients recorded in the registry with similar epidemiological features.

Results: Thirteen patients with positive patch test to phenylethyl resorcinol were identified. All the patients were women with a mean age of 42 years (range 32-59) and their lesions were mainly in the face.

Conclusion: Assessing the importance of infrequent allergens based solely on a case series is difficult. Multicentre registries facilitate the collection of cases and provide appropriate background information for new allergens.

Four polysaccharide fractions (designated as ZLPF-60, ZLPF-70, ZLPF-80, and ZLPF-90), extracted from the swollen culms of Zizania latifolia, were obtained by precipitation with varying ethanol concentrations (60, 70, 80, and 90 %, v/v). Their physicochemical properties and in vitro cosmetic benefits, including antioxidant activity, moisture absorption capacity, moisturizing efficacy, and whitening effect, were investigated. The results demonstrated that, with increasing ethanol concentration, the combined content of uronic acids and sulfates, zeta potential, and average molecular weight (Mw) decreased, while the particle size initially increased and then decreased.

2,5-dihydroxyacetophenone, a natural product from the fruiting bodies of , can effectively and safely inhibit the production of melanin in zebrafish model. To achieve analogues with more significant inhibition, 9 analogs were synthesised and 13 analogues were purchased commercially. Among them, 14 compounds can inhibit melanin production, of which 5 compounds displayed the most significant inhibitory effects, with inhibitory rates of more than 80%, compared to positive control SymWhite377 (phenylethyl resorcinol).

Highly stable whey protein-based nanocapsule prepared by in-situ crosslinking in Pickering emulsion.

Protein-based carriers contribute to encapsulating oil-soluble bioactive compounds; however, their environmental stability is concerned in further application, especially, under thermal variation. In this work, a novel method for the delivery of oil-soluble bioactive compounds was developed using food-grade whey protein-based crosslinked nanocapsules (PCCs). Whey protein crosslinked emulsions (PCEs) were prepared from whey protein-stabilized Pickering emulsions (PUEs) through transglutaminase stimulated crosslinking.

This copper-containing enzyme catalyzes the rate-limiting step for the melanin skin pigment bioproduction. Tyrosinase inhibitors can be exploited as skin whitening agents and food preservatives, opening new scenarios in food, cosmetics, agriculture and medicine. Despite the availability of natural inhibitors (hydroquinone, α-arbutin, kojic acid, retinoids, azelaic acid, resveratrol, caftaric acid, valonea tannin, chrysosplenetin and phenylethyl resorcinol), several synthetic compounds were proposed to overcome side effects and to improve the efficacy of natural agents.
