Article Abstract

We present the precision measurements of 11 years of daily cosmic positron fluxes in the rigidity range from 1.00 to 41.9 GV based on 3.4×10^{6} positrons collected with the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aboard the International Space Station. The positron fluxes show distinctly different time variations from the electron fluxes at short and long timescales. A hysteresis between the electron fluxes and the positron fluxes is observed with a significance greater than 5σ at rigidities below 8.5 GV. On the contrary, the positron fluxes and the proton fluxes show similar time variation. Remarkably, we found that positron fluxes are modulated more than proton fluxes with a significance greater than 5σ for rigidities below 7 GV. These continuous daily positron fluxes, together with AMS daily electron, proton, and helium fluxes over an 11-year solar cycle, provide unique input to the understanding of both the charge-sign and mass dependencies of cosmic rays in the heliosphere.

We show that the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) has the potential to make a precise measurement of the total active flux of ^{8}B solar neutrinos via neutral-current (NC) interactions with argon. This would complement proposed precise measurements of solar-neutrino fluxes in DUNE via charged-current (CC) interactions with argon and mixed CC/NC interactions with electrons. Together, these would enable DUNE to make a Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO)-like comparison of rates and thus to make the most precise measurements of sin^{2}θ_{12} and Δm_{21}^{2} using solar neutrinos.

Au nanoparticle-modified WO inverse opal photonic crystals (Au/WO IOPCs) exhibit exceptional NO sensing via synergistic hierarchical porosity, Au catalytic activity, and plasmonic hot electrons. A pioneering multimodal environmental operando microspectroscopy platform integrates photoconductive AFM, Kelvin probe microscopy, and DRIFTS with computational modeling. This approach achieves atomic-scale spatiotemporal resolution of interfacial dynamics, directly revealing: (i) plasmonically generated hot electrons fluxing across the Au/WO interface to activate NO adsorption and modulate electron depletion layers under illumination and (ii) dynamic Schottky barrier reconfiguration at electrode junctions that quantitatively correlates environmental stimuli (gas concentration, photon flux, temperature) with resistance evolution.

Regulating Ion Transport Through Direct Coordination in Composite Gel Polymer Electrolytes Toward High-Voltage and High-Loading Quasi-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide)-based composite gel polymer electrolyte is widely used in lithium metal batteries to address dendrite growth and side reactions. However, the low oxidative decomposition potential (<4.0 V) of poly(ethylene oxide) limits the cyclic stability with Ni-rich layered cathodes.

Effect of Impurities on the Redox Properties of Goethite.

Iron oxide minerals regulate the flux of electrons in the environment and are important hosts for trace and minor, yet critical, elements. Here, we present the first evidence of a direct link between the local coordination environments of Ni and Zn and the redox properties of their host phase goethite (α-FeOOH), the most abundant Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxide at Earth's surface. We used aqueous redox measurements to show that the redox potential , and hence the mineral's stability, follows the order: pure goethite ≥ Zn-goethite > Ni-goethite.

Plasma stratification in ac discharges in noble gases at low currents.

Phys Rev E

January 2025

CFD Research Corporation, Huntsville, Alabama 35806, USA.

A hybrid kinetic-fluid model is used to study plasma stratification in alternating current (ac) discharges in noble gases at low plasma densities. Self-consistent coupled solutions of a nonlocal kinetic equation for electrons, a drift-diffusion equation of ions, and a Poisson equation for the electric field are obtained for a positive column and the entire discharge with near-electrode sheaths. Standing striations are obtained for the reduced values of electric fields, E/p, corresponding to the inelastic energy balance of electrons in a range of driving frequencies.
