Objective: This study aimed to examine auditory brainstem response (ABR) test results in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to provide valuable insights for the future diagnosis and treatment of ASD.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis involving 26 children diagnosed with ASD admitted to our hospital between April 2021 and December 2022 (the observation group) and 38 children who underwent health checkups during the same period (the control group). ABR testing was administered to both groups at our hospital. We assessed differences in ABR test results between the observation and control groups and analyzed the correlation between ABR test results and the outcomes of the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) surveys. Additionally, we examined variations in ABR test results among ASD children across different age groups.
Results: In the observation group, we observed higher right ear latencies of waves I and III, as well as differences in left and right ear interpeak latencies (IPLs) of waves I-V compared to the control group (P < .05). However, the left and right ear IPLs of waves III-V were lower in the observation group (P < .05). There were no significant differences in ABR test results among ASD children of different ages (P > .05). Furthermore, we identified positive correlations between the right ear wave III latency, left ear wave I-III IPL, and right ear wave I-III IPL with ABC and CARS scores (P < .05).
Conclusions: Children with ASD display abnormal ABR characteristics, indicating the potential of ABR as a valuable tool for evaluating ASD progression in the future.

Objectives: Non-prescription supply of antibiotics in community drug retail outlets (CDROs) significantly contributes to antibiotic resistance (ABR). This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of educational intervention for pharmacy practitioners (PPs) in reducing over-the-counter (OTC) antibiotic sales.
Methods: From August 1, 2022 to January 30, 2023 a total of 80 simulated client (SC) visits (40 pre-intervention; 40:post-intervention) were made in 40 CDROs of Bahir Dar city, to determine the baseline and post-intervention extent of OTC sale of antibiotics.

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) remains the gold standard for evaluating hearing function in both animal models and humans. Features of ABR, including threshold, wave I amplitude and latency are critical for diagnosing and investigating the mechanisms of hearing loss. Critically, the rapid proliferation of genetically engineered mouse models in hearing research has created an imperative demand for high-throughput ABR testing capabilities.

Background: Acoustic trauma is a process in which the sound energy coming into the ear is so high that it causes hearing loss. Although various treatments have entered clinical practice today, studies on the prevention and treatment of acoustic trauma continue. In our study, we investigated the protective and therapeutic effects of CoQ10 in rats with hearing loss due to acoustic trauma.

Objectives: Platinum-based chemotherapy, cisplatin as well as carboplatin, can cause ototoxicity, which refers to drug-related damage affecting inner ear structures. At present, most ototoxicity monitoring programs rely on pure-tone audiometry, which is inadequate for detecting early outer hair cell (OHC) damage. Recent animal studies have shown that platinum derivatives can damage auditory nerve fibers (ANF), leading to cochlear synaptopathy (CS).

Background: Congenital hearing loss (CHL) affects language development and quality of life of children. Although high-income countries have implemented neonatal hearing screening (NHS) programs, data regarding the implementation of such programs in middle-income countries are limited. This study evaluated NHS coverage and the incidence of hearing loss, the diagnostic performance of two screening tests, and the associated risk factors (RFs), characterizations, and two-year follow-up data of affected infants in a middle-income country.
