Article Abstract

In this study, organ-on-chip technology is used to develop an in vitro model of medium-to-large size arteries, the artery-on-a-chip (AoC), with the objective to recapitulate the structure of the arterial wall and the relevant hemodynamic forces affecting luminal cells. AoCs exposed either to in vivo-like shear stress values or kept in static conditions are assessed to generate a panel of novel genes modulated by shear stress. Considering the crucial role played by shear stress alterations in carotid arteries affected by atherosclerosis (CAD) and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) disease development/progression, a patient cohort of hemodynamically relevant specimens is utilized, consisting of diseased and non-diseased (internal control) vessel regions from the same patient. Genes activated by shear stress follow the same expression pattern in non-diseased segments of human vessels. Single cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables to discriminate the unique cell subpopulations between non-diseased and diseased vessel portions, revealing an enrichment of flow activated genes in structural cells originating from non-diseased specimens. Furthermore, the AoC served as a platform for drug-testing. It reproduced the effects of a therapeutic agent (lenvatinib) previously used in preclinical AAA studies, therefore extending the understanding of its therapeutic effect through a multicellular structure.

Background: Choosing the appropriate implants for reconstruction in revision TKA is essential for long-term fixation. While cones and augments are routinely utilized to address tibial defects, the effect of augment location and size on the biomechanical stability of revision TKA constructs and the indications for the use of metaphyseal cones are not known.

Questions/purposes: Is the risk of cement-implant debonding of revision TKA constructs impacted by the thickness and location (medial versus bicompartmental) of tibial augments and the presence of metaphyseal cones during (1) a demanding daily activity like stair ascent and (2) torsional loads?

Methods: Under institutional review board approval, we developed patient-specific finite-element models of revision TKA from four patients (three males and one female, ages 50 to 80 years, BMI 27 to 37 kg/m2) who underwent two-stage revision and had a CT scan with no metal artifact after first-stage implant removal.

Evolutionary features of microscopic damage in shale under unloading action.

To reveal the microscopic damage evolution law of rocks under the effect of unloading disturbances with different amplitudes, electron microscope scanning, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and triaxial compression tests were carried out. The evolution patterns of surface and internal pore types and mechanical properties of rock specimens after unloading perturbation were analyzed. In this paper, a classification of the ratio of dmax/dmin (dmax and dmin refer to the maximum and minimum pore size of each pore, respectively) is proposed to examine the pore and crack evolution extension development on the surface of the specimen.

Background: The objective of this study was to compare the effects of daily consumption of white potatoes compared with white rice on cardiometabolic health in individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D).

Objective: To determine the effects of white potato consumption compared to white rice (a commonly consumed refined grain) on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in individuals with overweight or obesity and T2D.

Methods: In this randomized crossover study, comparative control trial, 24 adults with T2D [45-80 y, body mass index (kg/m) 25-40] consumed baked white potatoes (100 g) or calorie-matched white rice (75 g) daily for 12 wk, separated by a 2-wk washout, with assessments of glycemic control, lipids, inflammation, blood pressure, endothelial function, and body composition at baseline (only 1 baseline visit included as a covariate in statistical analyses), 6 wk, and 12 wk.

The screw-retained implant-supported crown is a durable, aesthetic restoration, but debonding between the crown and abutment remains a challenge to survivability. The purpose of this work was to devise an abutment shape that can be embedded into the crown while the crown is being additively manufactured. The result was a mechanically retained, no-adhesive abutment and crown unit that is mounted to the implant fixture.
