Article Abstract

Two siblings aged 5 and 15 years from Connecticut were hospitalized with petechial rash, oral mucositis, and severe thrombocytopenia approximately 10 days after they played with a jar of elemental mercury they found in their home. Before the mercury exposure was disclosed, the siblings were treated with platelet transfusions, intravenous immune globulin (IVIG) for possible immune thrombocytopenic purpura, and antibiotics for possible infectious causes. When their conditions did not improve after 6 days, poison control facilitated further questioning about toxic exposures including mercury, testing for mercury, and chelation with dimercaptosuccinic acid. The older sibling soon recovered, but the younger child required a prolonged hospitalization for severe thrombocytopenia, ultimately receiving repeated doses of IVIG, steroids, and romiplostim, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist. Close collaboration among multiple agencies was required to identify the extent of mercury contamination, evaluate and treat the other family members, and decontaminate the home. These cases demonstrate the importance of ongoing public health outreach to promote early detection of elemental mercury toxicity, and the need to evaluate for environmental exposures when multiple close contacts experience similar signs and symptoms.

Food is one of the main sources of delivering nutrients to organisms. The biological and physicochemical properties of elements are strongly dependent on their speciation forms. From this point of view, determining the speciation forms provides insight into the properties of the elements and allows discussions on general effects such as safety, health-promoting and nutritional properties of food.

Vegetation uptake of gaseous elemental mercury (Hg) is the main deposition pathway to terrestrial environments. However, the fluxes and processes of forest-atmosphere Hg exchange remain ill-constrained, especially in rainforests. To help address this, we used the 1 ha Masoala Rainforest hall of the Zoo Zurich as a dynamic flux chamber to measure net rainforest Hg fluxes and even calibrate Hg deposition velocities with turbulence measurements.

Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus) is a small pelagic fish that is frequently targeted by commercial fisheries. Japanese anchovy plays a crucial role as a vital link between primary and higher-order consumers. The elemental mercury in Japanese anchovy muscles easily bioaccumulates and is transmitted to top predators.

An overview of the contaminant mixtures present in key consumed fish and seafood species along the Portuguese territory.

CESAM-Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, Department of Biology, University of Aveiro, Estrada do Porto de Pesca Costeira, 3830-565 Gafanha da Nazaré, Portugal.

This study evaluates the concentrations of potentially toxic elements - mercury, arsenic, cadmium, lead and selenium - in seven marine species (Xiphias gladius, Aphanopus carbo, Merluccius merluccius, Helicolenus dactylopterus, Loligo vulgaris, Cancer pagurus and Ruditapes decussatus) across different locations in mainland Portugal and the Azores. The results showed a significant interaction between species and site, indicating that elemental concentrations varied by species and sampling site. This highlights the complex interplay of biological and environmental factors, such as habitat, feeding habits and local sources of contamination.

Coupled Precipitation-Vegetation Changes Affect Hg Accumulation and Isotope Composition in Loess Records.

State Key Laboratory of Environmental Geochemistry, Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guiyang 550081, China.

Geochemical records from loess-paleosol deposits offer valuable insights into past paleoclimate and paleoecological changes. Here we explore the potential of mercury (Hg) stable isotopes to study the changes of paleoprecipitation and paleovegetation and their causal effect on terrestrial Hg accumulation on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). We first document how variations of Hg concentrations, ΔHg and ΔHg isotope signatures in modern soils and loess are controlled by coupled precipitation-vegetation gradients on the CLP, and unaltered by postdepositional processes.
